Was it? It's been a while since I've seen it but I remember it being fairly effective. Probably one of the best Lovecraft-inspired thrillers we're ever going to get.

See the thing is, there isnt really "horror" anymore, just jump scares and shock value. Or maybe we're all too desensitized? The only relatively recent movie that had a good atmosphere was maybe first Sinister. Hellraiser still fucks with me

The Woman in Black from a few years ago (not the sequel) is surprisingly good. Deathgasm from last year is more horror comedy, and the 3rd act sucks, but it's great for a while.
