The other implication was actually far more terrifying although impossible. I'm not sure about anyone else but when she said "Where are the stars?" I just figured they got into some space time warp and were well past the universe's expansion threshold. So in that ending, they pretty much would be royally fucked.

Not really because being stuck under the ocean of their target planet is WAY for plausible from a technical point of view. So just because the audience didn't think of it first, doesn't mean it was the most likely explanation.
Frankly, I don't really like when movies/ shows end with "they went off to some other dimension, universe, etc." without exploring that other place.

A film from bygone era when spoof films didn't have ADD and could focus on one concept to effectively lampoon.
I love it almost as much as Young Frankenstein, just as much as Blazing Saddles and its superior in every way to Space Balls.
