The obsession is on the production side of things. For whatever reason the studio seems to think Ghostbusters is an extremely valuable property and I do not understand why. The franchise consists of one good movie, a mediocre sequel, some okay cartoons/comics and a few mostly shitty video games.
Yet in spite of this they have been trying for decades to continue it, first with a proposed third film with the original cast that never got made because Murray actually saw it for what it was, and now with a crappy reboot with a gimmick for it's premise. If there had never been all this talk of a sequel over the last three decades I think most fans would have stopped talking about it long ago beyond discussions of classic 80's movies.
Now they've gone and spent millions on making a movie that nobody wants to see. Most old fans don't want a remake and any hopes of an actual sequel died with Ramis, kids don't know or care about Ghostbusters and despite all their shouting modern day feminists don't actually buy things so in the end we're just going to end up with a crappy movie that will flop and bury an already dead franchise even further down.

I religiously watched the cartoon, had the awesome toys and still pop in the video game that came out a few years ago from time to time.
The problem isn't so much that GB is being remade since it was inevitable. It's that hollywood is trying to shoehorn in this bullshit leftist agenda.
It's not enough to make movies anymore. Now they have to be about oppressed minorities, "oppressed" women, how pathetic white "men" are, climate change, pop "science" or just straight up how fucking evil the republicans are.
Maybe I just want to watch brainless schlock to get away from how shitty this world is but that's escapism which has become a cardinal sin for some reason.
