I really hate /tv/. How they completely fail to understand any real subtext. How they take something profound that looks into the darkness of human nature and completely turn it around to fit some myopic narrative made to comfort themselves about their own place of superiority in the world.

This place is vile, holy fucking shit. The level of caustic nihilistic sarcasm around here is fucking deadly. You are all dying. Your ability to be human is being killed by this place.

I'm fucking done. Fuck off, /tv/. Enjoy your sad ironic lives.
>>
This documentary was really overrated. Its very boring.

Should we join a facebook event? Kony 2012? He doesn't have a point at all. We're designed not to take atrocities to heart. Lives become statistics after a point. Especially when we're in no way attached to those lives. Deal with it nerd

I give you the conclusions of the modern capitalist system everyone.
>>
>>66594748
the emphasis on statistics and more broadly, measurability (as a means of accountability) is more a characteristic of neoliberalism than capitalism
>>
>>66594748

9/11 never forget :^)
>>
>>66594779
Incorrect. It is decidedly a result of the industrial capitalism that grew out of the sweat shops and factories of europe. Modern Neo-liberalism is merely another form of the same old beast.

Why you need the right to keep and bear arms: the movie
>>
>>66594860
Hey that's something. When 9/11 happened even some of Americans pseudo enemies offered their condolences. Most Americans I have met don't give a fuck about any other country. A kind of "nuke me all" mentality. Maybe it's the beer, maybe it's living in the fucking Bible Belt, maybe it's the wrong thread. Fuck it.
>>
>>66595136
nobody cares about your meta perception of Americans and capitalism britfag
>>
>>66594902
This. I live in an unarmed country and literally had nightmares about this happening after watching.
>>
>>66594897
yes, neoliberalism did indeed evolve out of capitalism, but capitalism in and of itself doesn't require our contemporary emphasis on measurability. that came with neoliberalism
>>
>>66592878
Awesome fucking documentary, no idea why it didn't get an oscar.
>>
>>66594007
Now this is autism.
>>
>>66595330
>capitalism in and of itself doesn't require our contemporary emphasis on measurability.
That is just demonstrably false. The fact that corporations began to exist and began to move huge amounts of capital around is where all of the research and interest in accurate accounting on a social level started. It was developed further under the neoliberal era of economic thought but I think you're implying that neo-liberalism in economic terms equates vaguely to political liberals and the left (ie not the democratic party but the far left) which is also incorrect. If you weren't I'm sorry, also if you weren't I fail to see why you think bringing up the neoliberal incarnation of finacial capitalism when it is not contradictory to the statement that "lives becoming statistics at some point is a conclusion of modern capitalism."
>>

>Stalinism wasn't left wing

What the fuck am I reading.
>>
>>66592878
I don't get why people, predominantly Americans, were so impressed with this.

Is it because America is one big safe space these days, sheltered from the outside world?

What were you expecting, that these people sit around in their room full of regret crying? I honest to god don't understand what you people were expecting that you find what is shown in this so absolutely shocking.

It was undoubtedly an interesting watch, it was done in an original away, but I can honestly say that it was pretty much what I expected of these people.

I'd be more interested in knowing who killed JFK then watching a documentary showing me how people who committed crimes against humanity are in fact people, not Cthulhu. They eat, drink, shit, piss and have a good old jolly laugh with their mates, just like the rest of the world. Again, do not understand what you guys were expecting.
>>
>>66595674
Stalinism is totalitarianism and extermely pro-state. The difference between it and a rightist totalitarianism would simply be stated philosophical goals which have about as much relevance to the daily lives of people as the movements of the stars.

The right left dichotmy stopped being relevant when one system of societal organization proved to be more efficient than the others (capitalism). The only relevant distinction today is between people who are pro-archy and pro-anarchy.

Do you want the current system to continue being stable or don't you? That's the only spectrum that matters and has mattered since WWI. Every movement or part that is not for overthrowing capitalism is inexorably tied to the assumptions and goals of the modern capitalist system. And I should make it clear here that I am not in favor of destroying capitalism and returning to an anarchic state but I do find things like
>Lives become statistics after a point
(which may not be said in the west but is certainly how every organization conducts business) troubling.

At least in communist russia, the leader would literally say you didn't matter instead of insisting on your importance in ads while treating you as a number in every other sense.

>At least in communist russia, the leader would literally say you didn't matter instead of insisting on your importance in ads while treating you as a number in every other sense.
This is THE dumbest thing said in this entire thread.

The people were the most important part of communist Russia. Behind the scenes maybe not, with the gulags and mass killings.

For the facade however, what was publicly shown, the people were no.1. Ridiculing the people was the biggest nono, the entire state would have disintegrated. The leader openly saying you, the people, didn't matter in communist Russia was unthinkable, it would have made a mockery of the system and by extension the General Secretary himself. No, "the people" as a whole, is the closest thing to a deity you will find in a communist state.

They were Communists, do you really think they'd have supported the right to keep & bear arms (or any civl rights for that matter) and that they wouldn't have happily murdered FAR more people to insure their control of the country?

This movie was incredibly confusing. It seemed that every other scene the dudes involved would swap viewpoints in their arguments. After 40 years or whatever they wouldn't be wishy-washy on their views. The editing always joined the conversation too late and left out a ton of context.

I wouldn't call it shocking or surprising, but it definitely forced me to put myself in their shoes and imagine living in that kind of society more than a newspaper article or whatever. It was a very good documentary. It didn't blow my mind or tell me anything new about humanity. But I thought it was really interesting to have such a candid firsthand account of atrocities like that. It doesn't shock me that people like that exist, but I've never had a two-week-long conversation with a person like that and I've certainly never seen them put on surreal re-enactments of their war crimes using family members of their victims as actors.

You have to admit it was really something special. And I've got nothing but respect for the filmmakers. They really dug deep and cut through the bullshit, found people that were directly involved, and let them speak for themselves. I really don't know what else you want from a documentary. I thought it deserved the hype completely
