Why.....?

Visual effects are about faking reality.
>>
>>66537285
You picked the scene with the worst FX in Mad Max to showcase why it should have won the award?

>>
>>66537305
Ex machina was done by one CGI geek in the basement or something
>>
>>66537285

score the movies in visual effect from 1-10

then weight that score inversely with the budget of the movie. (divide)

then normalize back to interval 1-10

thats why
>>
Mad Max was praised for its visual effects. kinda happy it didn't win

Whats the difference between visual effects? And special effects that are 99% visual?

It's because it wasn't nominated for much and voters wanted to give Ex Machina an Oscar. That's really all it comes down to.

Ex Machina was a great movie. Many felt that the actress better role was in this, but she was nominated for Danish girl as it more oscar bait.

So it was nominated for Screenplay (And everyone knew that Spotlight had the best screenplay) so visual effects. Concidering they did visual effects that suited a 150 million dollar film on a 15 million dollar film budget and the movie was very good they voted it in.

It was also well deserved. They avoided a ton of time savers to save money so a lot of hard work went into making Ava a reality.

The final nail in the coffin for practical effects

>>
>>66538413
The most special effects != the best special effects.
>>
>>66537511

Special effects is basically stuff done on set and captured by the actual camera, like explosions, fake blood, animatronics/puppetry.

Visual effects are post-production stuff like clever editing of two frames to create a single frame, or literally painting each frame to create lightning or simply CGI.

Of course many things can be either special effects or visual effects. Like you can make a CGI explosion or you can just explode something and film it. Or you can explode something and film or and edit into the frame in post.

My advice is to simply call everything "effects". People will know what you mean even if you don't differentiate between "visual" or "special" effects.

MORRICONE'S LIFETIME OSCAR BEFORE HE DIES IS UNDERSTANDABLE

LUBEZKI DID GOOD WORK IN THE REVENANT

THE IMPORTANT THING IS MAD KUCK GOT SNUBBED ON BOTH, ESPECIALLY THE TOP TECHNICAL AWARD WHICH IS CINEMATOGRAPHY :^)

IT DIDN'T EVEN SWEEP THE TECHNICALS, LET ALONE THE REAL OSCARS LIKE BEST PICTURE OR BEST DIRECTOR

The visual work on Ex Machina was very good.

It was done on peanuts. They did a lot of new techniques to cut costs.

For example, if my team figures out how to do gravity/enders game quality Zero G shots for 1 million dollars instead of 25 million dollars, combined with a movie that was well received, I might win a Oscar for visual effects.

>>66538731

And the fact that he did a better job than a team of people says a lot.

>>66539086
Sure, I'm not criticizing the choice, I was just saying how strange it was that a small indie film won, especially since most of the nominees in visual effects are almost always big budget capeshit/action/sci-fi monsters.
>>
>>66539113
But should buzz be a relevant factor? In that sense the Avengers movies should get nominated for all the buzz they stir
>>
>>66537285
Ex Machina actually had really great effects and the visuals of the movie in general were probably the best thing about it.

I meant if they get noticed for that relevant facet of the movie than yes buzz is pretty important. I know academy nominated movies aren't usually shoestring budgets but among the ones that get nominated, if one part really stands out is one category and was done with some financial restrictions yet still stood out it should be recognized and praised.

>>66537285
Pitty award. Ex Machina was a film everyone clearly liked yet didn't land in any of the other tiers, so they just awarded it in the one it did.

And that's why the Oscars are a joke, films and actors that deserve it that year don't win, but holdovers from previous years that are "owed" Oscars do, and the smaller categories are used as a pat on the back for films that should have been contenders with the big boys.

Animated categories and documentary categories, you're lucky if they even watch your film, so most often they just default to Pixar or whatever is closest to home.

>Besides stereotypically old and white, the voters are established professionals of the cinematic industry.

From wikipedia: "Of the 5,100+ active voters confirmed, 94% were Caucasian, 77% were male, and 54% were found to be over the age of 60. 33% of voting members are former nominees (14%) and winners (19%)."

all these anons are butthurt that mad max didn't win visual effects.

Thing is Visual effects is post production work, and a lot of mad Max was live action shots. Thus a lot of the splendor of Mad Max was not visual effects. That why Mad Max won 6 awards including editing.

Thus Visual effects was a question of this - what was more impressive.

Star Wars, the bear that ate leo, or Ava? They voted Ava since they did a great job with little money.

I'm a fan of some of Lubezki's work, but his style just didn't suit that film. Hell, arguably the director didn't either, but obviously you can point at the Oscars or similar award ceremonies and say that I'm wrong. Because the Oscars are clearly never wrong.
