During some of the pans over the audience you could see people were visibly uncomfortable. The nadir of the night was probably the rape victim tribute song by Gaga that was opened by Joe Biden (yes the actual Vice President was there to talk about college rape). That's spot on, and the underlying reason why not many black actors get big roles and eventually Oscars. It's not the Academy's fault, it's not even really the studio execs/producers' fault, it's simply because most of the white majority audience can not empathize with a black actor, and prefer not to see them (and not pay to see their movies).
