The creator left after season 5. The lead writer left after season 7. The show is pretty much just obligation for me at this point.
The first 5 seasons are. The creators have even said they didn't expect the show to last more than 5 seasons so they put everything they had into those 5 years. As soon as you get into season 6, it falls off a cliff.
But maybe you'll keep watching until Felicia Day shows up. And then you'll want to kill yourself.

The first 5 seasons were conceptualized by the writer before production. They're a neatly tied and engagingly written family drama/epic. It's worth the watch. It's a family tragedy on the grand scale with doses of solid humor thrown in.
Season 6 and onwards were created because of the show's unexpected success in later seasons. The main writer wasn't involved but gave his blessing. Individual episodes are fun, but the overall narrative is nowhere near as engaging. It feels aimless. Seasons 1 and 5 definitely feel focused.
Watch the first 5 seasons. Imagine that as canon. Then, if you're interested, plunge ahead into further seasons.

5 first season are pretty good, a lot of shitty episodes but at least it had a plot.
Also, Dean is full husbando material.
The only real problem with the series is every season after 5.
It didn't only ruin the show, but also a lot of things around it, the actor that plays Sam is shit but the one that plays Dean is very good and this was exactly the kind of show that could've uplifted his career and make him great, unfortunely he got stuck with the piece of shit of a show that Supernatural turned out to be and couldn't be Captain America or Batman, what's just sad.
