Come on now, can we all admit this is pretty overrated.

>A meandering storyline
>"artsy" shots of leaves and birds
>cliche voiceovers
>We're, like, all dust in the wind dude...

OOOoooooooohhh so deep.
>>
>>66479233
it's the most grounded of his films besides days of heaven. it's also a directionless film that was made in editting. jim caviezel is lovely in it though.
>>
Well, it's about one man going through a war, who's more concerned in finding meaning in the war rather than fighting it. It manages not to get too caught up in what's going on (a little too much if you ask me, but that's to pander to audiences a bit and get a mass release).

It's quite a filmmaking feat.
>>

>it's also a directionless film that was made in editting.
tfw you will never get to see the original 7 hour cut with all the original storylines intact
>>
Next time you watch it, mute the audio and put on some decent music.

You don't need dialogue to understand it.
>>
>>66479233
>>"artsy" shots of leaves and birds
In other words "I don't fucking get it"
>>
>>66479233
>not appreciating cinematography
spotted the redditor
>>
I love Mallick, but this is not one of his best
>>
>>66479233

Yeah, it kind of sucks and the only thing it has gonig for it is some pretty shots, but of course some purist will argue thats literally all a movie needs to be considered good (actings, writing, editing, set design, music, sound design ect dont matter at all dude!)

Malick is extremly over rated and he peaked with Days of Heaven

>actings, writing, editing, set design, music, sound design ect dont matter at all dude!
all of these are top-notch in Thin Red Line so I'm not sure what you're implying here
>>
>>66483485
I like TRL but the writing was fucking atrocious. Most of the scenes had no real meaning behind some arbitrary character development about love and harmony after death. It wasn't deep at all and you're a fedora tipping edgelord for thinking it.

I bet you enjoyed Saving Private Ryan
>>
>>66483485

>acting and writing

>great in TTRL

Malick pls
>>
>>66483598
>It wasn't deep at all and you're a fedora tipping edgelord for thinking it.
Wow well now I'm convinced
>>
I think during TTRL Malick got artsy only for the sake of being artsy. Badlands and Days of Heaven are genuinely great films on the other hand.
>>
Unfocused, directionless mess.
>>
>>66483635

>being so triggered that you shit on a decent WW2 movie because someone criticized your mediocre and forgettable meme movie
>>
>>66479233

Books better.
>>
It seems like the premise was scatterbrained
>>
>>66479233
i like the first couple of minutes until sean penn arives a lot. rest is great too.
soo happy he didnt focus on adrien brody. there are too many war movies with an angsty faggot as the lead
>>
>>66483709

I think its a case of Emperor is wearing no clothes.

His two movies from the 70s were amazing and people fairly regarded him as a great film maker, but then plebs just went along with it because they didnt want to seem dumb, while they really didnt understand what made those movies great.

Then years later, he makes a mediocre movie, but all the plebs know is that he made those great movies from the 70s, so that means this one is great to!
>>
>>66483995
I'm afraid that's starting to be the case with Inarritu as well. The revenant is beautifully made but the film itself is so empty and mediocre.
>>
>>66484973

Agreed. Although I really liked The Revenant just because I love the history of that time and seeing it on film and North American wilderness porn.
>>
>>66479233
>A meandering storyline
Literally 2deep4u
>>
>>66483995
Days of Heaven is terrible though.
I think TTRL is flawed, but Malick's best work is recent with The New World and To The Wonder.
The Tree of Life is flawed, but it's a beauty and clearly a deeply personal project.
Still need to see Knight of Cups.
>>
>>66484973
That's always been the case with Inarritu.
He's a fraud in every sense of the word.
>>
>>66486295
>To The Wonder
>Malick's best work

Wait, what? The film is the definition of flawed.
>>
>>66486471
Flawed, but masterful.
Malick succeeded at showing the beauty of falling in love better than any other director I've seen.
I think you have to have experienced mutual romantic love at some point to truly appreciate To The Wonder.
>>
The New World, To The Wonder and Tree Of Life are kino.
>>
>Film a magnificent war movie
>Cut 90% of the film, including entire actor's roles, and send it out the door

Kek.
>>
>>66486636
>I think you have to have experienced mutual romantic love at some point to truly appreciate To The Wonder

I think this can be said about most of his films but To The Wonder does a very poor job, compared to his previous efforts, at conveying it.
>>
>>66487616
I seriously disagree.
Take the sex scenes alone, they don't feel erotic or gratuitous. You can feel the love of these characters, it's beautiful.
I can't think of any other film that accomplishes that.
>>
>>66487891
>Take the sex scenes alone
You don't need to film people being intimate to show the love between characters.

>I can't think of any other film that accomplishes that.
Ben Chaplin's character in TTRL and his long distance relationship.
>>
>>66483709
Days of Heaven a shit, Badlands fine
>>
>>66486389
Because 21 Grams is so fucking terrible, right?
>>
>>66493110
Yes.
He is a counterfeit filmmaker with nothing of substance to say.
He is more concerned with garnering praise for himself than creating genuine art.
>>
>>66493571
You're a fucking loser. All his movies have been phenomenal.
>>
I would agree to overrated but its still a really, really good movie.
>>
>>66493669
If you genuinely believe that, then you do not know anything about film.
>>
OK number of explosions. Not enough tits.

Also it needed more exposition explaining why the Americans were good and the Japs were bad. Maybe with some long flashback shots to Pearl Harbor and the Holocaust. Of course more seens where there were Japs getting shot. The scene with the captain arguing with the colonel was very disrespectful to the army, they should have cut that out of it. And would it have killed them to include a car chase?
