Continuing from the last thread, discuss color grading, post your fixes, etc.

Just finished this one, drowned out a lot the nasty murky green to give it a more neutral blue tone that the scene should go for.

All the redditors are going to show up and try to explain how "color invokes feeling" regardless of whether or not the color grading is applied properly

for instance, blue filters over snow scenes aren't always bad, just a lot of the time when it is unnecessary

prime examples of awful color grading are the LOTR Extended Edition Blu Rays, The Matrix rereleases, and more recently, The Force Awakens
>>
Not really related to the thread, but what was the whole point of this movie? I didn't find any of the characters likeable at all and the story didn't seem to have a point.

>>

You first. Likeable characters being necessary in a movie is a normie meme. A plot you find compelling in a movie is a normie meme. The expectation of "entertainment" from a film is a normie meme.

Now run off to /v/. You are memes, you are reddit, you are memes you are reddit.
>>
>>65131489
Both renditions offer good things. The top one gives off the essence of almost being underwater considering the rain and dark hue (which is fitting, considering what is happening in the plot at this point), but the bottom one has more color vibrancy, making the scene more beautiful. They can provide 2 similar yet unique feelings depending on how it's colored. That's why different cuts of a movie can exist.
>>
>>65132114
I understand the "likeable characters" part but then
>A plot you find compelling in a movie is a normie meme
>The expectation of "entertainment" from a film is a normie meme
I get it, the movie is supposed to be art then? Like those retarded-looking abstract paintings in art museums, I'm supposed to look at some weird non-sensical piece of shit and derive some "emotion" from it, right?

The main fucking reason to have artificial tones is to establish the world the movie is set in and for the expression of emotions. For example, in Mad Max, the movie is mostly orange to show how harsh the wasteland is and how the people adapted and react to it.

There are several video games that cover that topic with far more depth and entertainment value. With more enjoyable characters too. Blade Runner is a redundant historical artifact. No reason to actually watch and delude yourself into enjoying it in 2016 unless you're the kind of cunt who smokes a pipe and rides a pennyfarthing to work. Blade Runner is affectation and I am the last voice of authentic unpretentious thought on the internet.
>>
>>65132464
As a non-involved observer of this stupid argument up to this point: please just fucking stop, both of you. To begin with, Blade Runner is probably my favorite movie. Mr "I don't get this movie" can't even look deep enough into it to understand the appeal, while Mr. "Call everybody reddit and scream caps lock" is making an absolute ass out of himself and is doing nothing to explain his viewpoints on the movie. Very productive thread.

>>
>>65132627
I did a resume, the movie covering this theme is only a part of the whole story, you can shut your ass all you want because you recognized the subject somewhere else, it's doesn't change the art of this movie. And like the "reddit-memer" said earlier, a movie don't have to show relatable character to be good, in fact the fact that you take this point as a bad point only show that you don't relate to a robot and a kind of space cop, not that the character are bad. Look behind you're little opinion, maybe you'll see something new

>>65132986
Nice non-argument. Blade Runner is not only inferior on an entertainment level but also in terms of it being an in depth examination of the themes present in the movie. You don't win legitimacy points for having completely flat unengaging characters when your movie has capeshit level depth.

If it's both a shallower experience and also less enjoyable then what is the point in watching and praising it in 2016? Because you are a puppet of your father's memes.

Was tough to pull the magenta out without sacrificing light, so I didn't alter anything that would fuck his skin tone up too much. The blue filter was easy enough to discard though.
>>
>>65133084
Have you seen the same movie ? I can accept that you don't like some characters, or didn't understand the movie but to call it "capeshit" when it has no super-hero theme in it while, in using this term, also putting every super hero movie in the same level just show that you have nothing to say but spout meme on this board. You don't criticize a movie by calling a relatively new theme for modern super-heroes inspired movies without separating the capeshit of the theme they are presented in movie (classic action hero story most of the time)
>>
seriously, I understand the use of colour can be used to expand upon the themes or to inkove feelings, but the grading done nowadays is really shit and adds nothing to the film.
>>
>>65133446
>"capeshit" when it has no super-hero theme
Capeshit means spectacle driven + entertainment focus. It has nothing to do with super heroes inherently.
>>

>>
>>65139124
>Because I'm pretty sure the green tinge is to show that it's a virtual world.
I think that's the case and my memory is scenes on the broadcast ships and in Zion weren't colored green. The Matrix is perhaps on odd case because unreality is part of the plot, and for the most part unfiltered looks "better" specifically because it looks more real. They may have had good reason to give me the movie on the left side of that webm but I would prefer the one on the right 99 times out of 100.
>>
>>65139124

The "real" world is a bit toned down but the green is still there.
>>
>>65138970
I like it but at the same time I hate it
it's aesthetically pleasing and giving the impression that it's dawn or day breaking always adds an extra tone to the climax along the lones of "this is where our story is going to end"
But this contrarian in me feels like it's cheap. The first one
>>65137989
was a duel in the middle of daylight. It felt more casual and doesn't rely on screen tone to set the mood. The sound and emphasis on empty space feels more vibrant here because it is more casual and less thought is given into the color of day break.
Or maybe I'm just shitting out a nice load of pretentiousness.Who knows

I don't like it. The grading is there because the tone of the film is grungy and dark.

Especially the scene with that government guy, the green-ish grading on the left works far better because the tone of the scene is sickly and uncomfortable. The one on the right gives it an orange boost which is stupid because orange is usually a warm, comforting colour.

One of the advantages of film is that it has brutal color reproduction, so the basis which you work with after scanning has much better color information than most digital formats. You can color grade it while still maintaining better color overall, and not just end up with an almost monochrome tinted image.
