Where were you when you realized that Inglorious Basterds is Tarantino's best movie hands down?
Me, I was leaving a theater in New Orleans in 2009 after just seeing it.
>>
>>65079576

/tv/ will never admit to enjoying this movie because it's a jew fantasy
>>
its definitely his most well crafted movie

its very uneven in my opinion but it features some amazing scenes

the opening scene at the dairy farm is absolutely stellar

After my second rewatch. Pulp Fiction is fantastic and Reservoir Dogs greatly self-contained but this post >>65079640 is completely right.
>>
I think Jackie Brown is very good, and I can see why it's considered his very best, but the setting itself just doesn't appeal to me.

For me, Basterds and Hateful 8 are at a tie.

honestly it's fun to try and see the worth in all his films and argue about all his later ones have merit and interesting things to say or what the fuck ever, but the truth is that his first two were fucking great and nothing he's ever done since will be half as good
like everything else is OK and it all does have some worth and is full of ideas (although all stolen (homaged)) and passion and what have you, but nothing since reservoir dogs and pulp fiction has flowed naturally and seemed so 'right' and they all feel kinda formless and overdrawn, like he already used up everything good he had to say

Yeah he did, but Inglorious is still better than Pulp Fiction and you know it in your heart of hearts. Inglorious Basterds is indeed his masterpiece.

>>65080980

not that anon
they kinda are the good guys, but they aren't without fault
they are better than the nazis, sure, but killing Wehrmacht soldiers with baseball bats isn't really that honorable..

that's why it is one of Tarantino's best movies, it's ambivalent and it creates an interesting parallel between the Nazi propaganda movie within the movie and the movie the audience watches.
many people blindly cheer for the Basterds, but they aren't the morally pure characters you would assume they are

just my opinion
>>
>>65080980
You're an idiot. The Basterds are portrayed as barbarians.

Tarantino goes out of his way to humanise every single nazi character.

Then he pokes fun at his own audience for celebrating nazi deaths with the theatre scene.

This wasn't really hard to infer.
>>

They're portrayed as light hearted killers I would say

Tarantino failed horribly

Remember the gruesome scene in Reservoir dogs where the dude gets his ear bitten off? I cringed when I first saw that.

Now remember the scalping scene. boring.
Had Tarantino at least succeeded in making the violence somewhat realistic and gross, this film might've worked out for him.

Ambiguity.

Every nazi is humanised. Only idiots think IB is a cathartic Jewish fantasy.

Tarantino even goes as far as to draw parallels between the Basterds and modern Islamic extremists.
>>
It's always been my favorite and then I started browsing boards like /tv/ and saw everyone rating it towards the bottom usually only above Death Proof.

Dogs
Basterds

H8 is the only one I was disappointed by which is surprising because I love westerns. And while Kill Bill is good I feel it's a lot of style over substance so I don't feel right putting it above the others. Haven't seen Jackie and Death Proof.

The theme of the movie is the power of film

>nazis make a propaganda film
The most obvious
>film used as explosive
On the nose
>friedrich tries to woo Shoshanna by discussing german directors
>Fassbender uses Piz Palu as proof he is German
Film as national identity
>hitler shot in a theater
Film / propaganda has the power to change history.

The nazis are not brutal soulless killers (except for Landa who gets his comeuppance)
>you get that for killing jews?
>bravery
>he gets his head bashed in with a bat
The basterds are more evil than the nazis onscreen. Since we have been taught so much about the war through the media we immediately hate the Germans. The movie is also peppered with film references such as the tavern game, shoshannas face projected onto the smoke like wizard of Oz, the riefenstahl references, etc.

Film is powerful.

HORY SHET
>>
>>65079576
The movie got progressively worse as it went along.

Colonel Landa and the dairy farmer? Excellent scene.

"You get that for killin' Jews?" "Bravery." It was unintentionally a great scene, but the movie's still going good.

Shosanna being hit on by PFC Zoller? Meh. It picks up a little when Landa re-enters, but doesn't have that same intensity as before.

The tavern scene is another huge jump up in quality and the last really great scene of the movie. Arguably, it was the best part of the whole movie.

Pre-movie scenes are shit again with Pitt, Eli Roth and what's-his-face from the Office getting circles acted around them and looking really out of their depth.

Even Landa gets his weakest scene with the strangling thing. Then whatever weak grasp of historical accuracy is thrown out the window for cartoonish over the top revenge fulfillment fantasy.

And as a final fuck-you to the audience, they emasculate the clever villain right before the credits roll.

All good will built up was eventually washed away by the shit the movie devolved into.

It's just a ridiculous, glorified cartoon. It's not a "real story" or real movie. Just unmitigated fantasy/cartoon scenes strung together with a thin premise, story, and theme, while clumsily forcing quirky, cool characters, which work well in 1990s LA, into a historical setting that doesn't mesh well.

Most of his post-2000 movies qualify in this vein as well, especially Django.

I never saw it completely because 1/3 of the way through my roommate smashed the DVD in half because he said it was "crass and unfair to the German people"

Whatever it was his DVD and I wasn't super impressed with what I did see.

Where does that post talk about the insane use of history? In this film, Hitler traveled to an occupied country with 10 B-squad guards. I know it's a fiction film, and normally I'm tolerant of inaccuracies, but nonsense like that takes me out of the movie. That's like making a movie about a mission to Mars and making mars closer than the moon ("herr der, it's a movie, it doesn't have to be accurate")

And the bomb plot is not subjective. It's bad storytelling. When you have 2 groups of protagonists doing essentially the same plot, it removes all the tension. Even the Bear Jew going on his shooting spree was redundant because the bomb killed everyone anyway. It would have been better if there was 1 bomb, the bomb didn't work out, and then he went on his shooting spree.

Well it's an alternate history. The nazis are way more sympathetic and logistical shit like just how many armed guards Hitler had is a pretty small detail.

and I didnt like how the bombs were handled. Still like the movie though.
