When this came out this terrified me, I must have been maybe 12 (I realize age probably had a lot to do with how I approached the film back then). Like the other guy said, it took on an almost mythical status around it because information wasn't as readily available as it is today.
It looked real, it sounded real, there was nothing like it (to my knowledge) up until that point - so yeah, people thought it may be real. And there's no 'supernatural' stuff happening on-screen, so the movie exists in a cinematic universe that is no different to ours.
The first time I tried watching it, my mom took my brother and I to the cinema at night. We walked out maybe 20 minutes in. We used to live in a house that you needed to drive through a wooded area to get back to.
I was scared shitless on the drive back.
I've seen it several times since and it's definitely lost its edge, but its still a trippy little movie - specially for anyone that's never seen it before.
As for the challenge - $100 for 3 days is fucking peanuts so I wouldn't do it.
Hypothetically, if everything else was covered (equipment, transportation, etc) - and I was with 2 people I know, rather than randoms, I'd do it for free. 2 randoms means there's a chance that one or both of those people are illogical and feeble minded and may actually think supernatural stuff exists, and will project their fears onto everything that happens.

Nobody cares. Any horror movie you see when you're 12 is the scariest thing in the world. When I was about 12, I watched Event Horizon, and I had nightmares for days. Watched it a couple of years back, and it was a great little campy film, and not even remotely scary because I wasn't fucking 12 anymore.
TBWP is an absolute turd. It doesn't hold up, hell, it didn't even hold up at the time for me, because I wasn't 12 years old and easily scared by movies.
There was no "mythical" status. The movie made heavy use of marketing on the internet to generate a large amount of hype, it was one of the first to do it well. Pretty much everyone who saw it knew it was shit, but they pretended otherwise so they didn't stand out from the crowd. Look at Star Wars episode 1, same thing.
