American Graffiti is a great film desu

Star Wars is also a good film, THX1138 is overrated as fuck by contrarian hipsters

Hitchock pretty much created the modern suspense thriller as it is and the conventions that are adopted in modern films of the the genre even today, and in that sense his work was incredibly influential to pave the way for generations of great cinema. On the other hand I do feel that many of his films are overrated, however, he is by no means a hack though.

>>65067570
Welle's contributions to film are greatly appreciated by even the most uninitiated. I'm guessing you have a personal problem with him rather than a true dislike of his work.

>>65067637
THX was a marvellous effort for a young aspiring filmmaker, rich in imagination and poetic power. If anything THX is a film that is underrated, specifically because so many people dismiss it like you are doing right now.

not really, he was just shilled for decades by Roger Ebert
>>
>>65067804

THX had great moments but it clearly didn't have enough in it to support it's longer running time and the pacing is awful. It doesn't help that the only version available has been butchered by Lucas.

im not sure he's overrated, underrated, or properly rated as an average director.
But i felt like we should discuss robert zemeckis.

I wasn't aware he did back to the future AND forrest gump AND beowulf AND roger rabbit AND flight

He sure likes to try new things thats for sure. And i enjoy both the childish back to the future/roger rabbit tone and the flight/castaway tone. Haven't seen any of his CGI shitfest tho
>>
>>65067822

I have yet to see anything better than 6/10 from this guy and I've seen most of his "classics".
>>
>>65070203
he is somewhat underrated
>>
>>65070203

His movies are properly rated, people simply don't know the name of the man behind them.
Everybody knows Back to the future and Forrest Gump, but most plebs would be unable to say the name of their director, unlike Spielberg's flicks for example.
>>
>>65070203
Well, people do praise his films but he is not the iconic thing about the films if that makes sense. He also did cast away and Monster House that shows some real versatility I must say.
I think he needs to die to get the public recognition.
>>
>>65070203
he has made some really good films, but isn't the cool club of hollywood auteurs so hasn't received as much recognition

For what it's worth I think he is a better director than De Palma

This is the only one I agree on this thread.
Guy has been treated like a kino god by plebs since Inception and Batman.
>>
>>65070683
But you have to agree that it is the same as with fightclub. A bunch of tryard faggots praise him so it becomes cringy to support him. But he is not in any sense a bad director. May rely on gimmicks but uses them well.

I've been watching quite a few Hitchcock films lately since getting the 'Masterpieces' boxed-set. Some of those films are badly dated (Rope, Read Window), some are outright silly (The Man Who Knew Too Much 1956), and some are in fact pretty good (Shadow of a Doubt, Psycho, Vertigo)... but overall I can't say I have been very impressed with his work.

When I compare what Hitchock was doing in 1960 with La Dolce Vita for instance I think Hitchcock was actually a bit behind...

Vertigo is even more overrated than Citizen Kane, the lighting in the film is fucked up, everything in the film is all bright and shiny like a Christmas tree, looks awful

Also the plot makes no sense, Scottie apparently can't recognise that his new girlfriend is the same woman as before because she dyed her hair a different color? It's nonsensical
>>
>>65071386
Anderson has literally been making the same movie since The Darjeeling Limited . I'm not exaggerating. There isn't a single new thing in any of his subsequent movies
>>
>>65071252
citizen kane did not age like milk. It's got a great pacing and great takes. The use of the newsreel in a movie, the sets, the focal point thing he developed..

It's just that you're ignorant.

>>65071319
sort of, yeah. But he's got a solid style. It's very personal and, even if you find it mediocre, it works. His movies don't feel like an other movie rerun on tv, that's where im going.
>>
>>65071439
I wouldn't even call him a director
>>
>>65071413
Rope isn't badly dated, it's still is a great film.
Also Strangers on a train it's pretty good too to be honest.

>>65071483
but... it's... supposed to be dream-like.. right?

He is pseudo religious nut job who makes movies based on feelings. He is a hatchet job hack who basically uses the same camera angle/track/lighting shot in every single film he has done after thin red line. There is no narration, no plot, same old characters staring at empty space. Now he pumps out shit because he needs the money and don't give a fuck about quality. I used to like this guy, yeah I am mad.

maybe, but the movie is awful, and i kind of like polanski.
a funny thing: years before the movie appears my brother looked and dressed exactly like depp's character, and he is an antique bookseller and antique libraries investigator. his job was almost exactly the kind of job depp do in the movie. my brother is not so cute, but his complexion is similar to depp's. shit, he even used to wear the same moustache, eyeglasses and sachel were he used to carry his old books.
we saw the movie together and we were memerized by the similarities, his wife coul not speak a word.
after the movie all of his annoying colleagues were mocking him to a point where he just changed the way he dress, cuts his hair, and even the model of eyeglasses he uses.
