Mainstream film award shows don't make sense to me. They're so blatantly nationalistically bias, what's the point? In whatever year, Michael Palin won a BAFTA for A Fish Called Wanda. I love that film and that performance, but, what? The Oscars sometimes include one or two foreign films, and yet they also have a relegation pool for foreign films -- so what's the point?
The Oscars operate on this conceit that they're honoring the best films of that year but they're not at all. They honor Hollywood films most akin to the arthouse mode, and then sometimes ignore that entirely for the most polished Hollywood drama. It's just strange to me.
