The most annoying thing is the writers clearly wanted viewers to sympathize with him. He was initially written to be the "normal" guy stuck working with a bunch of weirdos and crazies. But with every snide comment and judgmental look he gave to the camera, he gradually turned into a completely unlikable asshole, to the point where you wanted someone to just tear into him and point out what a little bitch he was. It's strongly implied and even outright stated that Michael became the manager of his branch because of his salesman capabilities. He was promoted into the position not because he has incredible administrative experience, but because there was no place else to go from a professional point of view. He did great work, was diligent and had displayed commitment to the company. Michael also had a talent for hiring great people and assisting him in the branch.
By the end of the show, you developed an enormous amount of respect for Michael. He was immature and somewhat silly, but he was no slouch when it came to selling. For fucks sake, they even requested Michael to give a talk on why his branch was doing so well in comparison to the others. No one, not even top brass, knew why the fuck Michael was so exceptionally good despite his laid back administrative persona.
Note that Michael also forced the new boss, Idris Elba, to buy him out after they pretty much stole one of their biggest clients. That was fucking genius.
