You do know that in the classic Hollywood era almost every male leading man was tall? Cary Grant, John Wayne, James Stewart, Gregory Peck etc. were all very tall, especially for their era (average height wasn't as high then as it is now). There were some famous shorter actors of course. Charlie Chaplin for example. Paul Muni was short as well and wore lifts to make him appear taller. James Dean was quite short as well as Marlon Brando.
But mostly leading men were tall, it wasn't really until the 70's that it became more prominent to have short men as leading men.
