The poll results make me mad

Voting DS9, a series which mostly revolves around politics, war and being on a fucking station being the best representation of a franchise that started on the premise of the unknown, the exploration and the pushing forward is just objectively incorrect.

DS9 is the better series, but it is only star trek in name. Like there is not even an opinion here.

You realize that this is the most major driving factor in ruined franchises? It's because of idiotic people who don't know shit about the material they're getting into.

This is what brought us 3 fucking JJ star trek movies, that are alll competing to be the most terrible of them all.

Watch a Top Ten or Top Twenty episode list of TOS. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.

Watch the pilot of TNG, then try watching from the beginning of the third season. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.

Save DS9 as a reward for when you finish TOS and TNG.

Preaching to the choir here anon. Let me drag out my defense of the Tuvix situation.
>Disregarding the fact that he was very annoying, her duty (and the ethical thing to do) was always to save the lives of her two crewman. That Tuvix wanted to stay alive was irrelevant-- Neelix and Tuvok were non-compos-mentis at the time and were indeed glad when they got reseparated.
>The creation of Tuvix from two original life forms was no different from various incidents like Janeway turning into a slug or Kirk splitting into two people or the Federation command getting taken over by those parasites. Nobody ever complains that there was an ethical violation in any of those cases or that 'slug janeway had a right to life!'; the only reason people care about Tuvix whatsoever was that he was able to still carry out a job on the ship, which is a poor and selfish excuse.
>>
>>65018678
True, though it wasn't limited to the ship itself. There were episodes back in the Alpha Quadrant where you met the EMH creator who had a bunch of holograms in his house, and there was an arc about Hirogen holodecks that started a rebellion and hijacked a random ship.

Holograms in Voyager are magic. There are episodes where the writers forgot that holograms are just projections of light from physically separate computers, and that the code for them isn't stored inside the holograms themselves.

The dichotomy between this Star Trek thread and the one about 12 hours ago is incredible.
That old one, like this one, had a fairly small IP count. But it was filled almost entirely with thoughtful, level-headed discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of the TOS/TNG films. There were no memes, waifus, or shitslinging about DS9 and Voyager, and it died at about 150 posts once everything had been said.
Now this thread is like the polar opposite-- no intelligent discussion whatsoever, just pure rapid-fire indulgent shitposting that barely has to do with Trek

Bravo Amerifats

I see a lot of bad talk about reddit on here. As an actually member of reddit's Star Trek community, I'd like to have a formal 'diplomatic' meeting with /tv/ in the spirit of Star Trek!

Consider me the 'ambassador' from the United Federation of Subreddits.

I would like to say that I apologize if certain people have been making our community seem bad. We tend to have very quality discussions most of the time, and our culture can find a meeting point with yours I'm sure. When I told people on our subreddit IRC that there was a whole /StarTrek/ general thread they didn't even know what I was talking about, but already we are picking up the memes like 'Tell me about your sexual organs'. You'll find we have our own unique things to offer too, like real AMAs with Star Trek actors.

From now on I will use this username so you can identify me, and hopefully we can clear up these stupid biases against our sites and favorite shows, which are against the spirit of Trek altogether.

Live long, and prosper

DS9 is better, but they're just as Trek as each other.
TOS, TNG and ENT are all about venturing out and exploring the unknown.
DS9 and VOY are spinoffs, one set on a static station during a war and the other has more in common with Stargate Universe and Lost in Space than it does with other Trek shows.

>Didn't the English language borrow a great deal from Latin language.
>this is American education
Anglo-Saxon (academically called 'Old English') was influenced by Latin via Middle French after the Norman Conquest in 1066, though it has influences from a wide variety of languages. It is West Germanic, however, at its grammatical core, which is why it will never be classified as a Romance language.
English solidified into roughly its current state (Early Modern English) before the New World was even discovered.

Ironic for a post-TFAer to be claiming other people are newfags. There was a time when this board was more than 'le meme herp derp shitpost because I go to /r/movies for serious discussion xD', and there was a time before DS9 invaded these threads. Hell, there was even a point where people didn't try to turn everything into a 'general'
That alone probably accounted for a lot of the older thread quality

Jolene Blalock quotes:
“I firmly believe in what Stephen Hawking says—that if we don’t get off this planet, we’re going to go berserk. We have to have more space. And maybe that’ll mean that we multiply and just destroy another planet. But you know what? That’s mankind. Get used to it. We’re not going to change.”
“I was an acid-head and a pot smoker. There was this one time some friends and I were ditching off campus at lunch. We didn’t make it back in time, and school officials found us smoking weed in a van around the corner. I was so stoned that when they started taking names and I said mine was April June. It didn’t even dawn on me that that was just two months put together.”
“Spock was the sex symbol. A lot of people think it was Kirk. But, no, it was really Spock.”
>>
>>65020114
I'd come off as a gay friend who just wants to chill with her at lunch. Than we would hang out after work. We would end up going to XXX rated porno dvd and sex toy shops just for shits and giggles. Than after we would mess around with the sex toys while watching the dvd. I'd put the moves on her and she would slowly start to respond .

>STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE actress Jolene Blalock has strong words about her character and the hierarchy of her show in the new issue of the UK's SFX Magazine. Blalock says she was extremely unhappy with much of her character's direction in season three.

>"You can't substitute tits and ass for good storytelling," she says bluntly. "You can have both, but you can't substitute one for the other, because the audience is not stupid. You can't just throw in frivolous, uncharacteristic... well, bull and think it's gonna help the ratings!"

>The magazine characterizes her feelings about a potential future for show as decidedly cold and asked her why a change like elevating Manny Coto to head of the writing staff wasn't done earlier. Blalock is not kind.

>"You have this head guy who's some kind of ancient old croaker with no concept of the real world outside, with his fine wine and his, er, crumpets. And what are ya gonna tell them? 'Give it up'? 'Go home, be with your wife, go play golf'? No - then ya got no job! A powerful job is your identity. Give that up, and who are you? What the hell are you gonna do with all that time? You can't tell people what to do anymore!"
Blalock knew that Berman and Braga turned Star Trek into shit.

She was too good for our franchise.

i've read she was a big fan of TOS and bashed on TNG for the ending to ENT. thats all fine, but in the end, a good 75% of what her character does in ENT is posture sexually like a cat in heat or get hit on/in awkward situations with the male cast, so i feel conflicted about her in general.

Now that the Americunts have been driven out, let's get back to discussion.

What did you think of the handling of the Prime Directive post TOS?
In TOS it felt like a sensible utilitarian rule to cause the most benefit while causing the least pain, but later series seemed to develop it into an insidious dogma that caused more trouble than it resolved. Remember that time Picard was going to let an entire species be destroyed by a natural disaster, and only Worf's brother saved them? Or that time Janeway imprisoned Tom Paris for trying to save a different innocent species?
