There are respected black scientists like Sylvester James Gates who works with the Perimiter Institute, a highly respected institution in the area of physics. I think more blacks can be physicists if they put the effort into it. It takes a lot of effort rather you are black or white. But you're right, it won't work. How will the Detta/Odetta thing work with a black Roland? How will they show what Roland learns from the characters he's in the head of? The background of Jack, for example? Flashbacks after flashback with voice over?
Even The Gunslinger would be hard to pull. I can see Tarantino or De Palma doing it, but most modern Hollywood fimmakers can't into silent characters. They'll probably give Roland a sidekick from the start just to have some dialogue.
