Why isn't Daria the greatest animated series ever? Who here liked it? I thought that shit was cash

if you are in the lower 30's daria was great. it was about the ennui of the late 90's

literally no one else will get it.

It was bretty gud, but I think Mission Hill was better.

because daria was not very relatable for most people who liked to watch cartoons when it aired.

Just tried to watch an ep last summer, it was literally tumblr: the series, I bet social networks of that time loved it.

Gave the first season a proper watch recently, I really enjoyed it. I recommend the fan-restored versions with the original music. Captures the zeitgeist better than shitty stock music.

Really love the finale where Daria gets BTFO. It proves she's not some all-knowing, right-about-everything outcast, sometimes she's wrong and an absolute cunt. I like that.

>>64969719
First saw it as a kid. Thought it was the best thing ever.

Upon rewatch as an adult it's alright.

I don't remember there being a Daria board like there is an MLP board. Astonishing how you genuinely try to police one of the shit boards.

It doesn't seem very tumblr-esque. What part of the show makes you think about tumblr other than the fact that tumblr uses quotes from it constantly?

I guess I never liked her dry and pessimistic views- I try to be optimistic so I suppose her character clashes with my own personality so it's probably just a personal dislike.

>>
>>64970273
No, that's not how it works dipshit.
>>
>>64971426
The show doesn't always present her as in the right or someone you can relate to.

I'd hate to be that salty too, but that's what makes it entertaining for me. There are people like this out there.
>>
>>64971290

Definitely not. This is what most people don't get about her character. She wasn't apart of any social group. That was the message of the show/her character. She was smart enough to see through the artificial nature of high-school social groups and therefore refused to try to fit in to any of them. However if you actually watch the show you can see that the whole "social outcast" complex she developed was purely constructed within her own mind. Throughout the show she is given numerous chances by literally every other character to fit in and none of them actually disliked her at all. In fact in many cases, they outright say 'they look up to her' and everyone seems to go to her for advice and frequently refer to her as "smart". You kind of get fooled into thinking she's "unpopular" but that too is a construction within the mind of her sister/the fashion club. They are the antithesis of her - who care ONLY about fitting in. Daria's sister gets BTFO towards the end of the show by her tutor and she starts to release how artificial it all is too. There's so much more to this show than it lets on. It's demographic sells itself short. Really you need to much much older than a highschooler to really pick up on a lot of the themes presented in the show.

i used to watch daria back in the day with my gf, a fucking cheerleader and her sister, a goth bitch with her boyfirend the god damned biggest guy on the football team (he was linebacker but he should have been defensive end, which was my job)

tv shows back then assumed you knew everything was fucked. you faggot kids now wouldnt even understand. sifl and olly was the good show back then. if you faggot kids can even pretend to understand sifl and olly i will give you 20 internets. your friends on the twitter will upvote the facebooks.
>>
>>64970090
If you only skim the surface, yes. If you actually watch the show and pay attention, Kinda, but not in the way I think you mean.
Most of Daria's problem is that she has trouble relating to people and instead of trying to grow, she mainly is hateful and judgmental to them which is mostly offputting. The show doesn't follow the tumblr mantra though because most of the recurring characters are actually shown to be decent people despite their being based on stereotypes. By the end, Daria learns to tolerate and even kinda like many of the people she hated in the beginning. Daria herself could be said to be like a tumblr girl, but the show doesn't shy away from pointing out that Daria's main flaw is her mostly self-inflicted lack of social skills.

So you're not entirely wrong, but also not entirely right. It was a good show, though I will say Daira was probably the least interesting character. I kinda liked Quinn's character more.

These anons get it. Season 2 and beyond the show gets really good and really fucking comfy. Daria isn't some Mary Sue. She's proven wrong. She gets called out for being an uncooperative ass. She suffers emotionally for having a superiority complex, but she never goes off the deep end so far that we stop rooting for her and she maintains a sense of being a "good person" despite her sarcasm.

The world could use a good dose of angsty Gen X cynicism.
>>
>>64973901
The apex of her character growth is in Boxing Daria when she realizes that all the shit she's done in her life to be different has been causing her parents all kinds of trouble.
>>
>>64973267
Yes. The show doesn't actually point the finger at any one thing, ie, Daria is wrong! or everyone else (the school/her peers/parents/mentors) are wrong! It's not that simple. The show simply presents, in a humorous way, American society from the perspective of a disenfranchised and jaded AND YET intelligent and empathetic youth. This is a major theme of the show. Duality. The duality of Daria and everyone around her. Things may seem black and white and you may want them to be (because its easier), but in reality it's not - things exist in a spectrum or gradient And they also fluctuate. Daria is navigating this spectrum and commenting on it at the same time. Her duality lies in her conflict. Do i sell out? Or i stay estranged? The answer she finds: Is neither. Because the system it self is artificial and becomes meaningless, once you leave high-school. You can apply this to every other character of the show. What is their duality?

>>64973901

>>64974117
The wake up call.

This show should be used to teach psychology or something i swear. Because it really puts forth in such a clear and funny way, the nature of people.

Daria was definitely in the upper echelon of shows from it's decade as well as in the upper echelon of western animation overall. Sadly I think the final season kind of petered out, despite having a few of the best episodes in the show it still managed to be lackluster overall.

To claim the title of top animated TV show overall seems a bit of a stretch, and that's such a difficult category to give a "best of" award to anyway, especially when you throw foreign animation into the mix.

Daria will always be one of my favorites as far as western animation goes, but as far as the best one ever made? I'm not sure, that would probably go to King of the Hill or something made by Gennedy Tartakovsky.

She's " alternative" but at the same time even she herself realizes that she at some level is shallow like a Quinn.

It's a good but it's a good portrait of the era. Overworked parents. Token suburban black kids. And a hyper focus on a booming economy

Obligatory :

JANE ?
>>
Show would've been much better without Tom.

Daria having a love interest? Great.
Daria stealing Jane's boyfriend? No.
Tom being an incredibly bland cardboard cutout? Not feeling it either.

If there were to be drama between Daria and Jane, I would have preferred it not about some boring ass dude.
>>
>>64970317
I suppose but I remember those coming out after the show was done.
>>
>>64977555
It kinda played into the Daria isn't the perfect girl mojo of the show. If you'd asked her she would have said she would NEVER steal someone's boyfriend, and she'd be telling the truth, but when the moment came, she went with it because she's a feeling imperfect person.

I think Tom came off as a cardboard cutout because he was kinda emotionally lazy. He didn't want to argue most of the time so he was just agreeable to Daria's shit. He was comfortable around her and thought she was a smart girl so he was content with the relationship in whatever way she wanted it.

because daria does not acknowledge that she is like every girl, even when it is shown that she has the fantasies of other girl, especially with Trent.

and like other girls, she even found a castrated man to provide for her and refuse to be fucked by him and manage to make him proud not fuck her.
