David Lamb lied during the whole movie. To everyone. As shown repeatitly, he's an expert at lying and suspects everyone to do the same (like he doesn't trust the old guy until he sees his wife is near death). He lies to his boss, he lies to his girlfriend, he lies all the time.
Now when you give a first look at the movie, you would think he's honest only with Tommie and, as he said, all his lies are only to protect them. But that's because we see him from the point of view of Tommie, who's a little girl who wants to trust him (because she can't trust anyone else). In fact, David is constantly lying to her, he gives her a false name right off the bat, he lies about the lengh of the journey, lies about his GF visiting, lies about letting her calling her mom and even teach her to lie.
Why wouldn't he be lying about his feeling for her ? The same way he lies about having feelings for his girlfriend ?
David is not in love. David does not find her "perfect" or "so beautiful", he's only saying stuff she wants to hear and deepening their bond.

Ok I just finished it. It honestly felt pretty tense to me until the girlfriend came into the picture.
I was initially thinking that this was a damaged dude who couldn't hold a marriage together. So he wanted a 'family' camping trip with a daughter he couldn't have.
But then after that parking lot scene with his girlfriend I started thinking that she was picked up as a little girl and groomed into what she is.
When she actually came to the cabin, and remarked about missing it, It became clear that he's been using that cabin to make young girls fall in love with him.
He finds a new girl when they get to an age where he feels like a burden to them. I think that's the fact because of that uncontrollable crying scene with her and Tommie.
This was a good movie, and they knew how to keep the feeling of tension alive by not revealing exactly what he's thinking.
