So, will Star Wars make that final leap to beat Cameron?

I think it'll beat Titanic, but it seems unlikely to me it'll be able to beat Avatar.
>>
I hope so, James Cameron is a hack.
>>
>beat Cameron
Redditors actualy believe this.

How long was Avatar in Cinemas?
How long do you guys think Starwars will be in Cinemas?
>>
it's impossible for it to get past titanic, still has slight chance at crossing 2 bilion though
>>
>>64907212
Not at all. It will beat Titanic, but that's it. It won't come close to Avatar for now. Maybe when TFA gets a re-release.
>>
>>64907115
Shocking to think a film so poorly made is 3rd highest grossing of all time.

Jar Jar could have made the film about an arse, but between the franchise and Boycott Star Wars, this film would've still made 3rd place.

Doesn't matter about the film, its quality, or the story. All that mattered here was $$$.

Financially TFA may be peers to Titantic, Avatar et al, but as a film it should be below 100 places behind Avatar, Titanic et al.
>>
>there are people that STILL think it can beat Titanic

There's no way it's making 2 billion.
>>
If they don't beat Avatar with 7 they sure as hell won't beat it with 8 or 9.
>>
if the leads were white and male it would've annihilated avatar

I believe (although I might be wrong) Gisnep have stated that they have made back their 4billion investment from merch, tie ins etc. before the film even released

They should probably make a separate ranking for non-Cameron movies, especially after he takes complete control of the top 10 with Avatar sequels.
>>

This is all since 77 but it's just the concept, Star Wars can't be looked at as box office numbers alone for profit. There'll never be an avatar amusement park, or hundreds of avatar games. It's just crazy how much SW is milked. The movie revenue is important but the franchise itself has probably made over 20 billiion if all factors were considered.

Then /jim/ comes out of nowhere and sets the record not once but twice though. And the coming Avatars will make more than 2billion worldwide each, so he will likely have all of the top 5 grossing films of all time.

the business model in Hollywood is to bet everything on visuals, because it is how the american entertainment industry trumps any other entertainment industry form other country.
and then people being hedonistic, visuals appeal to them. then you have no praxis other than leisure in any doctrine from the liberals/libertarians with, at best, the merge of entertainment with learning, giving thus ''learning while you have fun''; and it is about learning ''science'' or ''how good the human rights are''.

this leads to lack of creativity in every cinematographic field, and the drive of the industry only through technology for cameras and other computer effects.
the opinion of the public is thus ''sure the story is not original, the acting is bearable at best, but the visuals are great, so the film is good''.

mad men is a best illustration of this, where people love it because it is the first time that they see actors with ''tailored suits'' and a mediocre photography.

Avatar was simply released at the right time when 3D was still new, so basically everyone wanted to see it for it's 3D gimmick, which was pretty good.

Titanic was a movie for everyone and appealed to almost all age groups, it hit everyone hard emotionally including me the 7 year old retard.

Star Wars is a franchise, so it knows it demographic and fanbase, but beyond that it lacks a technical gimmick like Avatar nor does it have the emotional investment of Titanic.

Genuinely haven't seen TFA; is it actually good or shit? I can't see JJ making a bad film, at worst it was average with a few OK bits?
>>
I am constantly amazed that anyone think there is anywhere near the same interest in avatar 2. The first one was successful not because of characters or plot but the spectacle of the first wide release 3d movie.

8 years later, 3d is dead and the public doesn't care any more. Most people I've talked to, even the plebs, look back on avatar as a pretty weak movie with a contrived plot and bad characters.

Now they're going to make 3 avatar sequels. I can't see the first sequel grossing more that 1.2-1.5 billion tops. With each subsequent sequel pulling in proportionally less as franchise fatigue takes a toll on the public.

Cameron knows how to make a novel spectacle and doomed himself the second he signed on to do a 4 part franchise. This isn't the terminator. There are no beloved characters or iconic figures for him to draw a crowd with. I literally can't even remember the names of any of the avatar characters.

James Cameron.

It's self fulfilling prophecy that his movies make obscene amounts of money and go right to the top of the record boards.

People will flock to see it because of Cameron.

They'll also see it because no one handles 3D like Jim and he's filming in the marianas trench for the movie.

You know that Star Wars was doing about 1.5-2 billion dollars a year in toys and videogame sales BEFORE the new movie hype shot it up to the stratosphere this year?

When adjusted for inflation, five Star Wars movies are in the top 20 of all time, with the original being second, behind only Gone With the Wind. It has sold an estimated 194 million tickets.

People love their Star Wars.

Your reasoning is just too simple and presumptuous. People don't need a super original plot or interesting characters to spend money on a movie. Posters here how claim to "be into movies" can barely even recognize good writing or characterization.

Also, distilling Avatar's success solely as a "3D gimmick," which has lost its novelty, is way too simple. It was an immersive experience and spectacle, and other films made since that time have failed to match it in that way. It doesn't matter that 3D is not as novel now.

So it's VERY possible for Avatar's sequels to challenge it for the highest all-time gross. Cameron's already made two films that grossed over $2B, so it's surely possible for him to do it again.
>>

>Back in 2010, Avatar became China's then-highest-grossing movie ever with a $204 million haul — but the country had far fewer movie screens at the time, when annual box office was just $1.47 billion. Relative to the full-year total, Avatar's China performance was almost unfathomably huge. For Force Awakens to take an equal share of China's full-year box office today — which grew 48.7 percent in 2015 and hit $6.78 billion — it would have to gross just shy of $1 billion over the coming weeks ($940.9 million to be exact).

I wonder how many people will get fired over this at Disney.

>Avatar & Titanic
New stories, no saga so that means no followers, no fans, with actors that are nobodies (DiCaprio wasnt that famous at the time of that film). No social media like now.
Both last 3 hours so it means it actually has less number of screenings
No toys, no books, no videogames, no marketing on every corner or store
The work of a man who knows how to tell a story and appeal to the masses.

>Star Wars
A fucking juggernaut by the hand of one of the biggest corporations with posters, ads, trailers, toys, games, shirts all over the world
A dedicated and loyal fan base that will pay for anything with the SW logo
Social media all over the place hyping the shit out of the movie
Nostalgia
Directed by a man that wants a paycheck and has no love for the story

The fact that SW is struggling to reach Titanic levels makes me wonder why hasnt Disney called Cameron to direct SW VIII and IX

>How long was Avatar in Cinemas?

As long as it was making enough money per screen for theatres to justify keeping it over other movies

>How long do you guys think Starwars will be in Cinemas?

As long as it was making enough money per screen for theatres to justify keeping it over other movies

I remember paying less than $8 to see Titanic.
I paid $15 for a ticket to see SW

Avatar and Titanic had tons of marketing for them. And Social Media definitely existed in 2009.

Yeah, the man who did Terminator 2 and Aliens has no idea how to pull a sequel.
>>

Also took both films over a year to reach those marks. It took Star Wars 3 weeks to pass 700 million domestic, it took Avatar 318 days, and two releases.

As for Titanic. it wasnt appealing to the masses. I was in high school when it came out. A lot of people didn't like it at all. BUT there were a lot of people that loved it. I knew multiple women that went and watched it in the theaters a lot. One woman I know saw it in the theaters over 25 times.

If TFA should reach anywhere those numbers american manchildren have to work harder. Rest of the world apparently see it for what it is and already lost interest.

jesus redditors and reddi/tv/ are so dumb and embarrassing.

>Star Garbage can beat Avatar
lmao wtf
>>
>>64912769
Avatar had passed $700m domestic by the end of its 11th weekend.

Why is the time it takes for a movie to reach a milestone impressive? Opening big and falling fast is something every blockbuster achieves by marketing and hype alone. Managing to stay consistent for 11+ weeks is a feat only a few movies in the history of cinema have managed, and two of them are called "Avatar" and "Titanic".
>>
>>64912908
Because the media hypes the opening weekends as being something to care about, so more people will go see the movies because they're apparently popular.
And retards fall for it, every single time.

Just checked. That thread still exists.

There's also plenty of discussion on the Star Wars sub reddit about all of TFA's obvious problems.

I guess they're all contrarians too :^)

Still better than the guy that turned Trek into pew pew action.

Lucas's FILM work is up for debate (his filming credits are shaky for the OT considering he ripped off a western beat for beat for Hope, and is credited for all the shit parts of Jedi) but his technical effects stuff makes him legit in that area.

So he was always a film hack but a legit technical effects technician or whatever you wanna call it.

Still haven't explained why Cameron is a hack either m80

I'll tell you an anecdotal reason why TFA won't be going over Avatar or Titanic, at least not with overseas sales. I went to watch it this week, on day showing, it was +600 seat movie theater and there were around 30 of us there to see it. Was a comfy showing though since I didn't have to deal with hooting niggers etc. No one made any annoying sounds during the movie or laughed at anything and at the end people just left quite soon after the credits started rolling without much emotion in them.

JJ was already fired and it was his idea to hire Ooga Booga. As much as the execs want to, they can't fire Ooga Booga without being called racists
>>
>>64913194

/tv/ is about 98% people who only watch action movies/capeshit etc, then maybe 2 oscarbait movies at the end of the year. No-one here actually knows anything about film-making or the industry.
