It's a good word for a meme movie.

Masterpiece Memeology.

Lots of Natural Light memes.

Grunting and pulling faces and mumbling is good acting meme.

Beard is acting meme.

I got cold and it wad hard work is acting meme.

Long takes meme.

Pointlessly overlong with nature shot fillers is deep meme.

Ryuichi Sakamoto meme.

Hearts Of Darkness meme.

This movie is a meme in search of an Oscar and a slot on the IMDB top 250.

Pathetic.
>>
>>64880996
>Oh now you're an authority on modern art too. Kill yourself you hipster faggot.

I never claimed to be an authority on anything, tell me why this movie is good? This movie is the equivalent of modern art, ie throwing shit against a wall and c oming up with something that 'resembles' art. Please tell me about all the artsy references i've missed when watching this movie, or am i just not 'smart' enough? I think you are projecting, if anything..

this. but the real pretension is expecting the merits of a performance based on a near-crippled survivor to even be open for appraisal, as if the director, actor or audience had similar experiences they can draw comparisons from to gauge authenticity. It's a trap, a smug and calculated one.

the real test is to just slap i dunno, paul dano or jaden smith in the same role, and see if you're still convinced you're watching a hugh glass.
>>
>>64881250
>Hunger games and The Force Awakens are the pinnacle of cinema
>>
>>64881428

> Don't you realize you're basically saying that no movie should aspire to be good?

I'm saying they shouldn't aspire to cobble together cliches of what plebs think Art is.

Every inarritu film reminds me of Barney's short film from The Simpsons.

He's the anti-Tarantino. A shallow pleb masquerading as an artist, imitating the trailer highlights of revered films.

>>
>>64881373
there's an argument to be made that the flashbacks and visions he has are pretentious, especially so since they keep repeating them in with different stylistic approaches

the flashbacks provide some basic narrative drive as to why he is persevering but they could have achieved that by only showing each flashback or vision once

it's absolute bullshit to call any other part of the movie pretentious though
>>
>>64880439
Fuck I wish Fitzgerald won in the end.

I know it's based on a true story, but he was making all the smart decisions while Hugh Glass seemed to have plot armor.
>>
>>64881428

> Long Takes = Good Movie

You're a pleb. You're on your way to patricianhood, but at the moment you are only able to identify a film by noting shallow superficial similarities to other films with high critical standing.

You probably still think black and white equals depth.

But this is good. At least you're progressing. You will probably have decent taste by the time you finish high school at this rate.

Inarritu is a showy director that can't fully accomplish all that he tries, but you people need to stop acting like he's trying to be a visionary genius. He just wants his movies well shot, is that such a crime? Are you people condemning him for trying? I'd rather have a showy movie that tries to be greater than it is than another average shot by-the-books movie without a director's hand visible

my opinion, within the context of the film, Leo's performance was stellar. however, if we're talking about realism, again, not really a valid criticism since each film creates its own relative reality, Leo's depiction of pain worked rather well.
>>
If it wasn't getting praise then we could all agree that it's just a good, exciting movie. There was nothing deep about it but it was tense the whole way through, had great visuals, great acting, great costume design, and a decent story. There's nothing to read into so why can't people just enjoy it for what it is? A badass guy doing badass things and managing to not die against overwhelming odds.
>>
>>64884174
Ok, I was just shitposting, but since you asked a sincere question, I'll put my doodoo pen down.

The movie got the indians right. Things around this time would go from open season on whites to good trading partners, depending on the season and especially the tribe.

The later 1800's got really nasty for indian/white relations. The fur era had tons of intermarriages, primarily for trading purposes. To this day, most indians that don't have an indian sounding last name have french or german names.

The location of the film missed by a long shot at times. You'd be seeing nothing but open plains and winding muddy rivers in an accurate movie.

>A badass guy doing badass things and managing to not die against overwhelming odds
That's ol Fitzgerald for you
>>
>>64880439
Because you obviously have shitty taste on movies. I bet you're watching too much transformers movies.
>>
>>64884323

I literally watched it because of the Oscar hype. When I first saw the trailer I thought "looks kinda boring, will probably skip". Then I hear from all sides that it's actually amazing so I go check it out and it's exactly as boring as the trailer tells. Every single interesting thing happens in the trailer.

So no I don't agree with that. I fell for the Oscar movies are good meme
>>
>>64884347

2 bad he died fag

>>64884391

I thought it was one of the most exciting movies I've seen in a long time. Not because of suspense over what will happen but just because of the constant danger the characters were in.
>>
>>64884560
>but just because of the constant danger the characters were in.

Yeah that kinda got me on the edge too. Sometimes. But it doesn't really hold up for 2 hours. You know he needs to face Fitz in the end so he's gonna survive no matter what so that feeling stopped about halfway through.
And the climax it was building up to wasn't all that satisfying
>>
>>64884645

It was definitely a little too long but that's my only complaint. The repeated flashbacks were unnecessary.
>>
>>64881995
You're actually the pleb. You dismiss long takes because you think they're a meme instead of looking at them in terms of story and what they're trying to accomplish visually. Fuck you.
>>
>>64884823

So what did Inarritu mean by those?
>>
>>64882556
Motion picture or something? Yeah it's stupid.
>>
>>64884174
Really very accurate. There are Cree, Pawnee, and Sioux referenced throughout the movie. Cree is separate language family I think. I'm curious, I don't think they said what tribe his wife and son were.
>>
The Revenant is simply the representation of the artistic bankruptcy plaguing the contemporary film industry.

Like Birdman, Iñárritu's last endeavor in hackery, this latest attempt is to convince the masses that what they are viewing is something deep or meaningful, when all it has done is push forward shallow technicality and exaggeration to make the frame pulsate with vulgar loudness. Characters are mere veneers, the cinematography is pretty but so conspicuous as to be rendered aggravating and the thesis is about as overdone as DiCaprio's acting. The camera feels like it has been waiting all day for a climactic shot and the film's deliberately difficult production history is laid bare in the indulgent cinematography.

Thematic complexity and philosophical subtext take a back seat to what amounts to as basically an action movie with action stars wrapped up in the veil of arthouse. And much like Salome, what lies beneath is ultimately puerile, obscene and holding fascination only for adolescents.

Iñárritu is guilty of something far greater than simply making a bad movie. He is guilty for the crime of gestating his pretense and self-importance, forcing many others to labor over it in a misguided attempt to create art and daring to call the afterbirth a film. Perhaps instead of taking his cast and crew to the ends of the Earth in search of a better shot, the Mexican counterfeit filmmaker should have taken his juvenile and crass sensibilities to the seedy San Fernando valley. There he could have at least made a profit of filming all the money shots he wanted.

The screentime could have been used to develop better characters and explore more motivation to survive, like giving more time to develop the french or even just cut to the camp more.

That shit is impressive as fuck, and a lot of those shots were technically overwhelmingly impressive from a production point of view. Other than Cameron and his 3d gimmicks, fucking around with extended take action sequences is essentially the only new ground being broken in modern filmmaking.

I liked the long takes tbqh. My dad said it made him nauseous.

It made me feel so much more involved in the first battle between the Indians and the trappers. Seems like most movies now would have had 27 different camera angles, all super shaky cam, with every take just long enough for you to see that some dude is getting fucked up until it switches to the next dude getting fucked up. The first battle must have been a complete bitch to film. I thought it was done well, and felt very grisly and involved.

I meant the literal ending. His face doesn't look nearly as good as Korean man.
While both had different themes Old boy was way better in the revenge department. Revenant has a pretty bitching fight but ends with Leo getting revenge. Old boy ends with the guy taking revenge killing himself but Korean guy was absolutely destroyed.

Then you're comparing the actors, not the ending.

He's comparing actors AND the ending. Oldboy was making an entirely different point. Oldboy was designed to make you feel like you, the viewer, got fucking raped. It goes all out with ruining the protagonist, but let's not forget they then took a step back and had him get hypnotized or whatever bullshit that was.

Weak comparison. Not all revenge movies are supposed to fuck over the protagonist and deny them their revenge. You'd be better served comparing Revenant to either of Park's other movies in his vengeance trilogy.

That's a pretty fucking shitty explanation. I liked the movie up until the last couple of scenes where DiCaprio seemed to be immune from his wounds and became fucking superman with a vengeance.

I don't understand why Inarritu would make him regain so much strength. Even if a couple weeks or so had gone by, he would not be anywhere near recovered enough to take on healthy man in the fucking mountain peaks. It just made the whole film come off as rushed and half-assed to me. Even if I did enjoy the cinematography.
