Should note that all the Roci's PDC ports seen in >>64871426 are covered up by the gas tanks Fred's mob welded on. Torpedo tubes on top/keel sides of the hull are clear though.

It's a missile frigate: small, fast, manoeuvrable, hits hard, and is basically made up of weapons modules, sensors, a huge engine and some tiny spaces for the crew in between all that.

I have a question
Is there a way to counteract gravity?
Say, if I was in the fluffiest of beds, would that stop me from being smooshed?
>>
>>64887869
Ceres is spun up instead, they're all standing with their feet facing outwards to space.
>>
>>64887869
Ceres was spun to a to produce 2.94 m/s2
>>
>>64887955

so why don't they spin it up to 9.8 and they wouldnt grow up crippled..
>>
>>64887983
Two reasons

To spint it to .3 g was already a massive feat of work and energy.

Many of the belters already cannot handle 9.8.

3.00 m/s2 is good since it gives belters a nice grav, and it almost equal to mars.

I am sure there are stations near earth that are spun to produce 9.8
>>
>>64888042

but ceres is a dwarf planet, they literally spun a whole planet ?
>>
>>64888085
They're hard core motherfuckers, the company that did it is living off the fame of doing that in the first place.
>>
>>64888085
Yep,

The company who did that first spun up Eros, then Ceres, and now they are building a generation ship for the Mormons. The company is viewed as the best engineering company in the Solar System, so they are one of the three people suspected of perhaps having the stealthy ships that attacked the Cant and the Mars Battleship.
>>
>>64887983
>>64888085

Spinning up something as massive as ceres is already borderline ludicrous even with the magical 1g constant thrust engines they have in this universe. Making it spin to produce earth like gravity would be impossible even for this level of technology and .3g is already a nice amount of gravity, i think that belters have serious health problems because they spend to much in 0g when they are out there in the belt working.

Still, mass wise ceres in a drop in the bucket compared to a proper planet. Even compared to our moon is a tiny rock, only 3-4% of it's mass.
>>
>>64887897
That's the whole point of a crash couch. It provides enough cushioning and support to counteract SOME of the trauma moving at high Gs causes, which is why everyone straps into them whenever shit's about to get real.

It's not a magic cure but it's a lot better than getting thrown into a wall and flattened.
>>
>>64888303

nobody said the drives are consistent 1g

they're just normally in an acceptable range, cept when they sperg out and inject drugs when they gotta go fast
>>
>>64888303
To be fair, we must also remember at this point Ceres was already mined out making it much lighter then it is right now.

We did the math last week to figure out how fast the navoo would have to be to alter the motion of Eros and it impossible without remembering that it hallowed out due to the mining.

For example, Ceres would go from

8.958 × 10^20 kg to something like
2.6874 x 10^10 kg.
>>
>>64888588
2.6874 x 10^20*
>>
>>64888588
>>64888624
How do I become a mathemagician
>>
>>64888755
School

Must admit, it helps if you use scientific and not imperial measurements.

Also, for the question on spinning up Ceres and Eros. it stated that it took a decade just to build the drives to spin them, let alone the actual spinning.
>>
>>64888410
still, they have massive ships that they can thrust at a noticeable thrust to weight ratio to feel some usable gravity inside the ships (that's why they build their ships like sky-crappers) for half the journey and then spend the latter half decelerating.

That's some hardcore technology.

>>64888588
>>64888869

That's actually really cool. One could argue that spinning up a smaller (but still big) body is possible with near future tech. If you could use the materials that a big asteroid is made of as fuel with ISRU methods and some highly efficient engines you could end up with a hollowed asteroid spinning faster. I mean it would be useless, but possible.

Man I'm really liking this show, it's been a long time since I've enjoyed a space tv show this much. That new star trek they are making really needs to step it up to match this show quality.
>>
>>64889021

I'm just glad to see someone's finally tackling gravity and acceleration in scifi

that shit was way back in Starship Troopers the book
>>
>>64889021
No problem, I normally just use that type of math to figure out how many KG of fertilizer I need to buy.
>>
>>64889126
One of the things i like the most about the setting is that it's the solar system. Seriously, so many scifi occur on a galaxy scale and because of that they need all sort of magical ftl systems. It's as if our solar system was small or anything like that or that you couldn't make interesting stories happen inside our solar system.
>>
>>64889483

I agree, there's so much story to be told about dealing with the challenges of actual space pioneering

I may be a big startrek fan, but it spoiled scifi shows into the alien/anomaly of the week mold for too long..

Most space opera is not really interested in science fiction at all, it's more of a retelling of the Age of Exploration where ships crossed oceans to meet and trade with/kill/colonize strange and quirky natives.

Everything about Star Trek's Vulcan/Klingon/Romulan/Ferengi/Andorian/Cardassian/Bajoran/Betazoid/Jem'Hadar/Breen races being completely equivalent and interchangeable with humans all the way down to tech level within a half-century's margin is fucking painful.

yeh some points it's iffy

remember that guy who opened his mask to pull something out of his helmet in space..

I'm pretty sure you cant do that

its not just air you need, in a vacuum pressure your own internal body pressure makes everything leak out of you
>>
>>64890804
>yeh some points it's iffy
>remember that guy who opened his mask to pull something out of his helmet in space..
>I'm pretty sure you cant do that
Depends on two factors
1 - how fast the suit can pump surplus air to replace what was lost
2 - even without air you can live for a few seconds.
>>
>>64890952
If you hyperventilate, empty your lungs and keep your eyes shut then you can be in vacuum a short while yeah, enough to do something quickly without a helmet.
>>
>>64891139
Yep, and also I don't want to go into the maths, but taking off a mask will not cause instant depressurization.

http://www.spaceacademy.net.au/flight/emg/spcdp.htm

Even a spacesuit would have 10-20 seconds before full depressurization, and that without the suit pumping in more air.
>>
>>64891312

his whole face is exposed to space, he should pass out and have shit leaking from his nose
>>
>>64891354
No, the mask wasn't off long enough to get to depressurization. It still was a stupid ass thing to do, but if you removed the mask it wouldn't be a instant pass out and nose leaking situation, as there would still be pressure in the suit for X number of seconds.
>>
>>64890587
Clearly you don't understand physics. What, you expected him to explode or some other Hollywood meme?

Try looking at what an actual decompression involves. Protip: the human body can survive the vacuum temporarily.
>>
>>64891480
and in both cases (The mask being removed for 3 seconds, and the two holes in a large room) they were not holed long enough to get depressurization.

You've got a minute tops.
http://science.howstuffworks.com/question540.htm

That's without a spacesuit at all. Uncle Matteo opened his visor only, for about 10 sec. He exhaled slowly and constantly throughout to avoid having the blood vessels in his lungs burst. He wasn't close enough to the sun to get thoroughly zapped and cooked by all the nasty rays. Most of all he made it look like an everyday thing... because he's a Belter.

Here's a vid:

No, why do you ask?
>>
>>64891607
We don't know what kind of atm pressure martians use on their ships or how much air was leaking out, we can only speculate with what we saw on the scene. Also a human is more massive than some blood and amos had his magboots on. Still, you gotta remember this is a tv show, they will some details off here and there wrong, sometimes even on purpose. This is not like some hard scifi books that tries to be 100% right all the time even if it makes the plot less interesting and sometimes stop all plot progression to explain the math behind how something works in 5 pages.

>>64891914

You have a minute yes, but after 10-20 secs of pure vacuum you'll suffer serious injuries. But he had all the pressure on his suit so what he did in theory is doable, retarded and crazy, but doable. And i guess they added that scene to show exactly the kind of life belters are used to.
>>
>>64892162
You lose conciousness after 15-30 sec. Death after 3min for chimps/humans. That youtube video I posted recounted a number of incidents.

That one with the astronaut having a hole in his glove for almost an entire spacewalk was amazing - and all he ended up with was a red mark on his hand (which he thought was from chafing) where the blood had rushed to the surface of the skin and effectively plugged the hole. Arthur C. Clarke wrote a similar story (before spacewalking was even a thing) were a guy trapped in a sealed off corridor on a moonbase plugged a hole with his ass - and only ended up needing a skin graft on the freezerburnt glute after.

At worst in the Expanse scene Uncle Matteo's face might have swollen up a bit and felt a bit chilly - and that would have resolved itself when he put the visor back on an re-pressurised. Perhaps as one incident from that video mentioned he might have lost his sense of taste for a few hours.

The Expanse could use a George of the Jungle style narrator. To explain to all the real world physics and hinted-but-not-shown plot points to the average /tv/ non-sci-fi plebs.

>Narrator: "So viewers, that's why the water pours out sideways when Det. Miller wants a drink."

The Expanse has been surprisingly great but that may be because I've sidelined trying to predict where the plot and characters are going. It's got a dumb tagline of "GoT but in space" but I don't see the similarities. We've seen enough of the Belter faction. Really looking forward to seeing more of the Mars faction. /tv/ Is my only go-to for discussing this show.
>>
>>64894978
Don't see him as the brittle type who breaks easy. All his (menacing) strength seems to come from an experienced past and solid self-knowledge.

Think Naomi and Alex will be the first to crack under the pressure. Holden's so laid back he looks like a limbo dancer.

>/tv/ Is my only go-to for discussing this show.
So you're a redditor?
>>
>>64894978
I don't see him snapping anytime soon. He fits the role of the "enforcer" of the group perfect. The scene in the club established that quite well.

>>
>>64894978
>>64895298
He won't. That's kind of the point of his character. He's already broken. He's a violent, amoral guy and he knows it, which is why he finds other people to act as an external conscience.
>>
>>64893781

Bookfag time:

Amos is almost amoral and extremely sociopathic. He relies on Naomi to be his conscience, Jiminy Cricket style. The only guiding ethos he really has is loyalty to his family (ie, the Rocinante crew) but he knows that can take him too far if he goes for revenge. So whatever Naomi says goes, since he met her before he met Holden.

He does want to bang her though. He knows it won't ever happen and he doesn't push it, because his mom was a poorly treated hooker and he was pimped out as a kid.

Show wise, basically he knows he's not a nice person but Naomi is so if Naomi says to do X or not to do X then that's more socially acceptable if not morally/ethically right.
>>
>>64895987
When I found out Amos backstory it was a blow. Was not expecting that.
>>
>>64889021
I'm thinking the cylindrical-torus design of the Nauvoo (>>64871590) would indicate that it's going to be spinning as it travels to its destination - in order to provide a constant gravity for the generations to live in (besides that provided for by the odd thrust once under way).

Not much use travelling to another world if the generation that reaches the destination are all spindlier than current Belters and can't live there.

Bookfags... how do belters/martians and anyone in a spaceship in general take care about radiation¿?
Do they build magnetic fields to stop it? Do they have medication against cancer or diseases related to the irradiation of cells and DNA¿?
>>
>>64902288

They build a certain amount of shielding into ships and stations. But with ships it's a mass vs protection issue and the more mass you devote to hull plating the more you have to eke out of your engine and it might cut into your cargo space etc so compromises have to be made.

Radiation is one of the issues killing Belters young, along with their shit diet and growing up out of a steady 1g environment like they were evolutionarily designed to do which causes anomalies in bone and muscular development, among other things.

Radiation damage to DNA is a problem, but then carrying a foetus to term is an issue for female Belters as it is with their physiques. So mostly it's a steady cycle of people from Earh/Mars leave home and go to the belt where they settle down and maybe have kids > kids grow up in low-gee and can't handle normal gravity so have to become spacers > have fertility issues and die off > get replaced by new people from Earth/Mars going on. You won't be getting many 3rd or 4th-generation Belters.

People who can't go home to Earth or Mars and are or want to get pregnant often go to Ganymede since it has a magnetosphere and that helps with rad exposure too.

You're talking about the bozone layer - which is what keeps the rest of the solar system safe from Earth's ill effects.

It also the Killer Klowns away (most of the time).
>>
>>64905332
Quote from Wiki:

Earth's magnetic field, also known as the geomagnetic field, is the magnetic field that extends from the Earth's interior to where it meets the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun.

I am not saying it is the only factor in preventing radiation, I was just saying it is one of them and it looked easier to put a magnetic field on a ship than flooding it with ozone alright
