"Star Wars" was about nostalgia and re-experiencing old adventures like the Flash Gordon serials. "Empire Strikes Back" bring the opera and drama to the franchise, and even in the OT the relevance was on Luke, not Vader.

Lucas made Star Wars as an homage to old adventure serials. It was coneived of as a stand alone film. He cobbled the story of episodes V and VI out of story ideas that were left on the cutting room floor from Episode IV. It was only the absurd amount of money that Episode IV pulled in that made him even want to do a sequel at all.
The only canon Star Wars movies are A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Live with it.

What matters is the story, the rough script of lucas was the whole 3 movies. Lucas never said that he took the best part of it's 3 acts and put them in the first movie. He didn't think that he would be able to show all 3 acts and he took the death star from the ending and put it in the first movie and also he killed obi-wan which in the original story wasn't intended. That doesn't mean that the parts that weren't included in the first movie they were shit.

Why do people believe this? Lucas is blatantly lying about that, and it's not hard to find the original scripts (or to read "The Secret History of Star Wars") and figure that out. Lucas went through a lot of drafts, but none of them were anything like all of the OT. The one before the shooting script (which was still being revised going into production) had some hints of The Phantom Menace, but it was very little like even the "finished version of ANH.
Lucas was making it up as he went along, and there's ample proof of that.

In the pre-1977 days, Vader's role changed from being a mere general without mask or life support suit, to a space samurai and leader of a clan (the Sith), to the final pre-ESB character we got in "Star Wars". MANY early ideas were discarded or reworked as the years passed. For example, at some point Vader had a castle in the middle of a volcanic wasteland, and the final showdown in RotJ would have happened in a throne room filled with lava instead of being in the Death Star.
That image is just, well, a product of some ideas that were finally unused for the first movies. Even the Emperor wasn't a Force user up until ESB.
I suspect the "Knights of Ren" idea for TFA is based on this early concept for Vader.

To add to this, when Timothy Zahn was writing The Thrawn Trilogy, he originally intended to name the noghri alien race the sith. The reason for this is that the fanbase had been confused as to what that term meant, so Zahn decided to explain it. His original idea was that Vader had saved their planet from destruction, and in gratitude, the species named him their lord. His helmet was originally intended to look like their faces. Lucas told him to scrap the idea, but it's pretty telling that in the early 90s, an author felt the need to come up with such an elaborate explanation that was nothing like the "true" meaning of the word.
