His original reasons for atheism is based on his understanding of evolution (was a biology major that flunked out). Only recently has he become more militant and retarded, I mean he attacks the existence of Jesus. Atheist or not his existence is well established. He's no theologian by any means and his attacks on the philosophy of God are infantile and retarded... Long time fan of his. I can say truthfully he has lost a good portion of his edge in his age.
He's not funny when he's edgy for the sake of edge, he's funny when he's using edge to show people how absurd something is. In the first two Golden Globes he hosted he was making fun of the whole song and dance, he was saying how celebrities were unfairly seen as royalty. He was the classic Ricky we all loved.
In the 3rd Globes he did he made fun of Biber, Sex and the City, and Johnny Depp again. He was NOT funny, and showed us the Ricky he had become in the last few years.

I'm not a Christian but take a quick look at how many hospitals, schools and other positive ventures are currently helping people all over the third world, funded purely by Christian efforts in the west. Compare that to the achievements of Atheism, Islam, Judiaism etc and Christians really come off as the "good guys."
My personal theory is that lots of people are naturally compassionate and the Christian community they were raised in gives their good intentions some kind of direction and organisation, just like some people are naturally sociopathic and can use the same religion as a justification to commit horrific crimes. Without religion they'd still behave the way they do, they'd just tell themselves they're doing it for a different reason. Or maybe religion creates a kind of feedback loop: Good people create a "good" religion and use it to explain their good behaviour (and vice versa), then the religion affects new generations and pushes them further towards the tendencies that created the religion. This is a subject for /his/, anyway...
I'm a big fan of Gervais' work but he maybe takes his position as a celeb too seriously with all this atheist proselytism. Either that or he genuinely enjoys trolling everybody he can, as much as he can. I'm currently listening to the original XFM radio show he did with Smerch and Pilks and that seems more and more like the case. He's one of those people that are very entertaining to watch from a distance but you'd never want to meet them.

I see them by the dozen lining the streets of my hometown, loitering and opening shops and mosques but they usually keep to their own neighbourhoods. Even second generation muslims tend to speak with an accent because they refuse to let their kids associate with "infidels."
Gervais (and many other people in the media) obviously go after Christianity because they're a soft target. Attack the Jewish religion and you could be blacklisted, lose work and potentially be attacked by the media as "anti-semitic" (see Mel Gibson). Attack Islam and you could be in real physical danger. Attack Buddhism and people won't have sympathy because those little chinese fellas never hurt anyone, get off their case! Attack atheism and you'll be branded a religious nut. Attack Christianity and they generally turn the other cheek while the Jewish community will see you as an ally (Jews and Christians generally don't get along).
