The boardwalk is creaky--auditory memory from one of the times Tony and the crew had meetings on the boardwalk.
It amps up his stress (re anxiety) level too.
Tony is highly susceptible to auditory annoyances--for example, the air conditioner he beats up the day after he got out of the hospital, or how he tells Paulie he hates his "HEH HEH" laugh (calling it a tick that needs to get checked out by a doctor).
The question we have to ask ourselves, why does Tony get so irrationally stressed out over noises? Is it an Italian thing? A behavioural thing?
It's interesting to think about.

Poor storytelling device. You can see Tony's struggle coming to the truth just by the way he acts around Puss and the crew.

That's just general white noise/ambiance--Tony hates repetitive sounds.
Remember when he had a panic attack in his old red chevy when his stereo started skipping?
Tony gets irrationally angry at repetitive noises--most likely because it's a learned behaviour, or hi is existing in a constant state of high anxiety/stress.
Once again, is it an italian thing? A learned behaviour? Or a mild symptom of aspergers?

its a people thing. i also hate repetitive or ambient noises. specially ones made by machines, like beeping sounds (i keep my cell on vibrate at all times). i guess its because i hate waking up early and loud beeping sounds remind me of my alarm clock.
