I don't understand why people thought this would be a hit.
It's a three-hour movie taking place almost entirely in one room. Its pre-release buzz focused mostly on things only nostalgia buffs would get excited for: 70mm film format, an overture/intermission, a "roadshow" release. And the unique selling points are contradictory: The 70mm format is a treat for the senses! would be a great selling point...for a Western with breathtaking mountain vistas, not for a movie taking place in one room? Same goes for the three-hour run time: three hours might promise an epic adventure in the old Hollywood tradition...but three hours in one cramped room only promises cabin fever.
Basterds promised Brad Pitt killin' some Nazis. Django promised Jamie Foxx killin' some slaveowners. H8ful promised a long conversation in a small room about mutual ethnic/regional distrust, the intersection of race, gender, violence, and sexuality, and the legacy of slavery in America. Hell, that isn't an elevator pitch for an ultra-violent revenge movie; that's an elevator pitch for tonight's edition of The McLaughlin Group on PBS.

Just go see it, I've gone twice just because another friend wanted to see it and there aren't any points at the movie where it loses your attention. Pretty fun movie with satisfying deaths. The obvious, I also felt that the journey to the cabin was like a test, it reminded me of the afterlife, the wagon was taking the devil to hell, and they kept picking up dead people along the way, similar to Dante's purgatory.
I think the characters were just symbolic for Tarantino's view on religion.
The Cruxification at the start made me invert the film, instead of a cold wilderness, and no life everywhere, I imagined Christ was alive and the world was too.
This is what the film is describing, what happens during/after the death of Christ, from Quentin's perspective, of course.
