JRR gave away certain rights to Saul Zaentz in his lifetime which have been recycled continuously but the rest? Hollywood accounting is in the way. Unless there's a huge payoff it will never happen.

Doubtful. Passionate as LOTR fans are, they don't seem as outright insane as Star Wars fans have become. Look at the recent influx of prequel fans from Reddit, tumblr and other miserable shitholes since TFA opened. These fuckers are like bible bashers from the deep south, no amount of logic or reason has any effect on them, they just keep chanting "Jesus loves you, he died for your sins" or in their case "The prequels are actually masterpieces, like, they have worldbuilding and the score is good" day in, day out. Their childhood nostalgia for those appalling films has rendered their ability to think critically completely non-functional.

the LotR movies were the perfect coming together of actors, writers, crew and an enormous amount of pressure
LotR was almost rightly seen as a story that could absolutely not be turned into a movie, and that pressure made everyone work super hard on ever the most minute details. watching the behind the scenes stuff on the extended editions is amazing, they put a crazy amount of work into those movies.

The Lovely Bones isn't really that bad, just not something you'd expect from Peter Jackson.
The Hobbit films are surprisingly competent given the Spider-Man 3 like trainwreck making conditions Peter had to put up with, they are what they are.
