The content of the story is irrelevant, because the point is Anakin falls and later redeems himself. Later EU writer turn him into an actual character, everything about him, but his name, comes from later EU developments in some book. Plagueis is a throwaway line in the script by George Lucas, turned into something more in the EU. That's it, he's not a character with any impact on the plot of a movie, and like everything else in the EU, he is irrelevant to plot.
