Most kids stopped playing with figurines before iPads even, because middle aged nerds took over their hobby and marketing started pandering to them instead of the original audience. And they've stopped playing outside, not just because of all of this stuff available to them, but because fear sells in the media causing parents to see kidnappers and pedophiles everywhere, panicking if the kid doesn't report to them on his cellphone every couple of hours. I was a kid just before the cellphone revelation started. I remember a time where you could be gone for half the day without parents worrying where you were, and there was a certain healthy freedom to that for both parties. Furthermore, I don't regret treating my toys like toys, I had fun with them at the intended age and I don't care if they can't sit on my shelf any longer.

I was really frustrated when the toyline seemed to just disappear from stores overnight and was too old when Extreme Ghostbusters rolled around. Wouldn't have minded owning more Ghostbusters or G1 Transformers for that matter, but had to do with TMNT instead.

I think it's helped along by the fact that it isn't a complete reboot but a sequel to The Real Ghostbusters. That and they didn't just try to ride on the character's diversity and as a result they're fairly well written for a children's cartoon.
