I never watched Star Trek before but I would like to give it a try.
Where should I start as a good introduction to the series?

The first episode of TOS. It's the only series that you can appreciate from the beginning. If TNG were your introduction to Star Trek, the cheesy dialogue would turn you off of it forever.

Watch a Top Ten or Top Twenty episode list of TOS. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.
Watch the pilot of TNG, then try watching from the beginning of the third season. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.

It was the fault of the producers and network executives.
TNG and DS9 were syndicated, so they had more freedom to let the writers do what they wanted.
VOY and ENT were tied down to UPN, so they had network executives mandating shitty ideas like brand synergy paradigm-syncing via cross-promotion for wrestling.
