I never really understood the complete loathing of jar jar.
The only point that really annoyed me was the entire droid vs gungans fight focusing on jar jar fucking up. I would have preferred to see the actual battle a little more like on both or endor. The comedy didn't really work well in that part, broke the tension

The problem with Jar Jar is that we already had comic relief characters who turned out to be important to win the day (C3PO&R2D2. They carry with them the jokes and funny moments of the OT, even if their contribution to TPM is minimal). Jar Jar was too much of the same thing all at once. Remove C3PO or Jar Jar and the movie would improve.

I think Jar Jar is a really good character. Everyone remembers him. That oracle lady in the force awakens was leagues worst and forgettable for having such a decent sized alien role in a movie. She was just the oracle chick from the matrix. The force awakens lacked any real significant aliens. George Lucas at least tried and for the most part succeeded in making memorable characters.
