ITT: We discuss how a movie that made more than $2.5 billion and even had packs of motherfuckers contemplating suicide over how said film's fictional planet was not a reality has failed to have a lasting presence in the public imagination.
>>
On Rottentomatoes
>Avatar: 7.2/10 from critics
>82% audience
>The Force Awakens: 8.2/10 from critics
>90% audience

I guess Stars Wars is the better movie for both critics AND audiences.
>>
>>64609200

Rottentomatoes is pretty ded as a credible source at this point

producers caught on
>>
Avatar is a gimmick that they dumped money in to get money out. Not a lasting piece of art
>>
Avatar is pure shit. Every design is stupid aside from the landscapes themselves, story is meh. I dont get why its a thing at all, aside from the fact that it caught the 3D wave when the hype was at its highest.
>>
>>64609229
It's like that with every other movie critic site, anon. TFA is universally liked.
>>
>>64609057
>motherfuckers contemplating suicide over how said film's fictional planet was not a reality
those same fucks never watched nature documentaries or traveled

It had a low user score on Metacritic until Disney remembered to hire Chinese to spam positive reviews there

This
>>
>>64609057
They have made no effort to keep the fan base engaged.

James even said that he is relying on people's nostalgia of the first one to hype the 2nd.
>>
>people STILL parody Titanic
>damn near everyone forgot Avatar, let alone any memorable lines or scenes
>>
I liked the part where the colonel is in the mech with the giant knife.
>>
>>64609428
I mostly remember the scene where the giant exo-skeleton-mecha-thingy gets disarmed (becasue the weapon wasnt attached for some reason) and proceeds to pick up a fucking knife.
>>
holy fucking shit I forgot about those suicidal ninnies. Well, SUPPOSEDLY suicidal. I still think that story's bullshit because the world James Cameron created was so fucking boring and lame. At least when a kid grows up to be a neckbeard after watching Star Wars on VHS for literally hundreds of times, you can understand because the world of Star Wars is cool and fun.

Pandora sucks ass.

Do faggots like you ctually exist?
>>

>>
The reason Avatar has been "forgotten" is because Jim hasn't flooded the world with merchandise and sequels like Marvel or Star Wars or virtually every other franchise these days.

Jim's the only man who can make two critically acclaimed movies that each make fucking billions and still come out an underdog.
>>
>>64609265
It fucking started the hype you fucking idiot. How old are you?
>>
>>64609544
Why are you so mad?
>>
>>64609543
Guys, why are the letters on this poster for Avatar weird? Wtf what language is this, it clearly is Avatar, not ABATAP
>>
>>64609057
same marjeting seen on TFA
cameron shills and disney shills are two sides of the same coin
>>
>>64609428

Pretty much this. I hate Titanic, but that movie is loaded with memroble imagery and lines, even if some of them are goddamn atrocious.

The only thing I can remember about Avatar is the scene where the tree explodes or some such shit.

Reminder that James Cameron stole the look of Pandora from Roger Dean.
>>
>>64609257

You realize that is the exact thing that Disney did when buying Star Wars for 4 billion and creating TFA, right?
>>
>>64609602
Sure, I shouldnt have said "caught the 3D" wave. However it's still true that the hype from Avatar was to a large part caused by the 3D itself rather than the movie.
>>
>>64609478
Nah. Even the fans forgot about the movie before they went through with it.
>>
>Star Kuckolds so ass destroyed their shit rehash won't come near $2.7 Billion they complain about a lack of "lasting presence in the public imagination"

simply epic gentlesirs
>>
What was that whole suicide story about anyway? It was just a marketing ploy, right? Nobody could be that retarded
>>
>>64609286
you can't travel to Pandora faggot ass retard.
>>
>>64609900
Hey bud, did you see this?>>64609200
>>
>>64609879
>3D itself rather than the movie
the movie was not meant to be seen in 2d. Everyone knows this and that's what it was advertised as.
>>
>>64610110
So you're saying that Avatar is only a gimmicky movie? I knew it
>>
>>64609257
>Not a lasting piece of art

this would describe 99.99999% of movies, most especially blockbusters. So you're not really making a point. You're just stating the obvious.
>>
>>64610190
Jaws is a blockbuster and a lasting piece of art
>>
>>64610164
not with the cameras they made to film it. No

there was an avatar website at the time, there were droves of people who wanted to die, rather than continue living without being on pandora.

i saw the movie about 5 times in theaters, i was legitimately depressed in the beginning of 2010. i used to come home after work, get into bed, and throw on my headphones with the avatar soundtrack, and sleep until 3 or 4 in the morning then go to work.

terribly depressed, but fuck i still love the movie.
>>
>>64609963
Why would I care about appeals to popularity? Are they suppose to mean something?
>>
>>64610224
Its only been like 40 years faggot
>>
>>64610110
Well, if it had a good story, cool action and wasnt filled with dumb design choices there might've been a reason to see it in 2D. Is your point that it should be seen as a tech demonstration?
>>
I'd be pretty embarrassed if I were Cameron, spending decades of my life on something so devoid of creativity.

you should had gone to cancun, Playa del carmen and fall in love. Did that shit back in winter of 09. Best fucking movie experience of my life!
>>
I liked the design of the flying things. Their anatomy, bone structure etc. had a lot of thought put into it. this was true of the hexapods to a much more limited extent.

I didn't like the movie much.

I feel like there are a lot of movies like this, where the work put into the assets is really good but the overall movie isn't impressive.
>>
>>64609057
>We discuss how a movie that made more than $2.5 billion and even had packs of motherfuckers contemplating suicide over how said film's fictional planet was not a reality has failed to have a lasting presence in the public imagination.

Marketing.
>>
>>64609057
simple. Jim didn't make a bunch of neverending toys and video games. If only Star Wars had come out and nothing else, no one would really have given a fuck either.
>>
>>64609597
>>64611116
Would you two delusional fucks give it break? I've seen this argument make the rounds in the the comment sections for numerous "Avatar has been forgotten" articles online (that's right, other people are noticing too) and it simply doesn't hold any water. Titantic didn't have any merchandise or official sequels either, and look, people still remember it. "B-b-b-but, that was based on a real life event!" Okay, how about Inception? Hardly the pinnacle of cinema either--just a popcorn movie by Nolan--but it still left more of an impression on people than Avatar did. It even checks a number of boxes that Avatar does and then some. Original IP; no sequels or any plans for any; no toys; no video game tie-in.
