anything good come out last year? i think i missed almost everything. considering watching the sequels to insidious, sinister, paranormal activity, and something else i can't remember... not becaus ei think they're good but because i've seen every other installment in the series so why stop?
>>64608533
srsly? can't wait for vod of krampus tbt amigo
>>
>>64608642
>not Noroi
yeah but why though?
>>
>>64608643

The Atticus Institute was good.
It Follows was good as well, despite the hate from the "shilling" that was said to go on here.
>>
>>64608686

Look, I love Noroi, especially considering I have a soft spot for found footage. But Kairo is pretty much a perfect horror movie. From the tension of the hallway scene (one of the few times I've actually experienced true, pit of my stomach dread watching a movie) to the overall doom and gloom atmosphere that permeates the film. You actually feel the movie weighing down on you even after you've finished watching it, leaving you feeling isolated and alone and hopeless. There's a reason it's refereed to as "The Gloomy Sunday of horror movies".
>>
>>64608592
Jagten's scarier, m8. Speaking of foreign spooks... Do you think foreign language makes shit scarier or do subtitles ease the tension?
>>64608735
I forgot I saw It Follows. That was great. I loved every minute of it. It is the only horror movie I've seen in years that I'll randomly think back to and feel uneasy again like I did at the end.
>>
You guys really REALLY need to see Berberian Sound Studio already.
>>
>>64608818
well said
>>
>>64608857
It's on the list... Right next to The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.
>>
Asked this in the last horror thread and I'll ask again because I'm hungry for more.

I recently watched Vampyr and loved it. Instantly one of my favorites. I'd like to see more, and I hate to use this term but I can't think of any other way to describe it because I've been here way too long, "patrician" horror movies. Next on my list is The Phantom Carriage, and I got some good recs in the other thread, but if you guys have any more, I'd love to hear them to add to my list.

Noroi I feel works better only if you're unfamiliar with Japan. It gives it a sense of strangeness and unfamiliarity adding to the suspension of disbelief.

I don't know how scary it would be to a Japanese audience, but I think Kairo would be scary regardless

Im assuming you mean Kubrick's the shining? Its my top horror movie, and in my top 10 movies of all time. With the risk of sounding like a pretentious POS, the camerawork in that movie is simply amazing.
>>
>>64608495
pic definitely related OP.
I mean in some respects it's a shit film, but I'd be lying if I said it failed to scare me senseless at times.
>>
>>64609053
Pretty good, but it would have been better if I hadn't guessed the twist 20 minutes in
>>
>>64609288
I know what you mean. It's like back in the day when Iron Chef was new to U.S. viewers, the big part of the appeal is the weird foreign culture shock. Like in Noroi there's the weird cable TV show with those two ugly guys who happen to be doing a ghost segment. It seems very strange, but also engaging, to U.S. viewers, but must look very different to native Japanese.

There's another movie by the same guy who did Noroi. It's called Shirome. It's got some genuinely great scares, but what really turns me off about it is it follows this Japanese girl pop band. They're so annoying to me I can hardly watch it. They're always screaming and pretending to cry and cuddling with each other and shit, and maybe that's something a Japanese audience can get over, but it drives me up the wall.
>>
>>64609331

Love this movie so much. Probably the best found footage in years.

Anyone else see The Banshee Chapter? I thought it was really good.

>>64609371

Retribution, Seance, Charisma, Doppelganger, and Sweet Home. Haven't had a chance to see Creepy yet, but I've heard good things.

>>
>>64609408
>Im assuming you mean Kubrick's the shining?
Yes, and I agree. He was a perfectionist when it came to that kind of thing.
>>
>>64609441

I actually liked Shirome, and Occult. Hell, I actually think Occult is a better overall movie than Noroi, horrible ending special effects aside.
>>
>>64609452
i think there are like three people on /tv/ who liked the banshee chapter including you and me. i don't know why though because it wasn't particularly scary, to speak for myself. i think i just connected with a lot of the themes and characters.
>>64609473
it's lovecraftian, mate.
>>
>>64608495

Blair Witch Project for me.

Because I don't like innawoods and it's one of the only found-footage movies that did it right. Still creeps me out.
>>
>>64609452
I have seen Banshee Chapter, and I couldn't get into it.

I'm a big Lovecraft fan, a big Hunter S. Thompson fan, and a chemist by profession. There's just too much that makes me cringe.

The Hunter Thompson impersonation in particular is something that ruined my suspension of disbelief. I wish they had just gone with some angry counter-culture/drug-culture author with a grudge, instead of a direct impersonation. They even had him dropping famous quotes. Totally took me out of it.
>>
>>64608735
What did you like about The Atticus Institute. The premise seems awesome, but reviews are saying the execution was bad.
>>

The Thing
Friday the 13th IV
Texas Chainsaw Massacre II
>>
>>64609538
>it's lovecraftian, mate

Vaguely, sure, but I don't see why that's an issue.
>>
>>64609584

I have a major boner for found footage/pseudo documentaries, so it hit all the right buttons for me. I thought the execution was just fine. Maybe I was more drawn to the movie because of my predisposition, I dunno, but I really enjoyed it.
>>
>>64608735
There is no way it follows had a shill budget. It was just a bit of a pleb filter as far as horror went and that led to a lot of accusations of shillery.
>>
>>64609712
Wait, is that the one where the government is trying to do research on psychic powers, but none of their subjects are legit, and then they find that one woman whose posessed and they research her to try to turn her into a weapon?
>>
>>64609799
if it alleviates any doubts, i spent months calling all hype for the movie shilling with zero evidence
>>
>>64609799

What's funny is, for all the shit it gets around here, the majority of not just /tv/, but 4chan itself still hasn't grasped the main theme of the movie. And it's not even like it's that deep, or hard to get. The director beats you over the head with it and even outright states it during both the beginning and the end of the movie. Shame it gets hate around here, because it really was a fantastic movie.
>>
>>64609423
It's not a fucking "twist". It's part of the story that the characters are discussing practically from the beginning. The horror lies in what the kids do to her.

You can't measure a movie's quality by how easily you can guess what's gonna happen. For fuck's sake, you sound like a toddler.

Austrian horror movie about a pair of young twins. Their mom comes back from a facial surgery, and she seems different. Gets sorta predictable, but it does suspense very well. Definitely worth a watch I'd say.

This is called shifting baselines. The Horror genre has become so bad, that a mediocre movie is held with high regard.

>>
>>64610320
The movie had no idea what it wanted to be, it shits on it's lore and it's characters do random out of sync things all the time. It had potential but shits itself in the second and third act.
Honestly with "how well it was shot" or "that soundtrack" It should have been called;
The Pretentious Implication.
>>
>>64610611
It knew what it was doing from beginning to end. Shit's on its own lore? You've got no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
>>
I thought pic related and Area 51 were great.

Area 51 was incredibly unrealistic in terms of getting into the base, but it still tickled my pickle once they were in the base exploring.
>>
>>64610611

You're missing the point. We get as much knowledge of the lore that the characters in the movie have. They don't know or understand everything completely, so we don't. There are supposed to be unknowns. There are supposed to be unsaid connections the viewers are supposed to make going by what they've seen. And, aside from the one instance where the Follower was standing on top of her house, it always kept consistent with the lore.
>>
I want to know the horror movie that actually scared you - the movie that kept you up at night, gave you bad dreams, made you paranoid or afraid of the dark, etc.

"It will always follow you"
Except when it was right next to her in an unconscious vehicle where she spent god knows how long unconscious in a hospital, it won't. It understands and will give you a whole fucking day to pass it on for the plot.

Again it will always follow you
Except when it spends god knows how long on your roof to have that one creepy shot the directors wanted in for some reason.

It will take shape of the ones you love and mimic their voices
That's cool except it never does that till the end and it's only noticeable who "it" is if you're a fucking faggot and break down this piece of shit shot by shot.

As a coming of age movie it's meh as a horror movie it's fucking garbage.

yeah. my tastes might be lame but the movies that kept me spooked were paranormal activity, the ring, drag me to hell (tho it was pretty funny).

No movie really does that to me, but Jacob's Ladder is one that always gives me chills. That movie deals head on with one of my big fears, so it's disturbing for me in that way.

It's a great movie. If you haven't seen it I strongly recommend it. Please don't go into it thinking it's like Silent Hill though.

So do you just get the feeling of the paralysis but like everything is dark and you can't wake up

Or do you get the upgrade where you also hallucinate and see shit out of the corner of your eye/look at an area and feel intense fear

But man I feel for you, I used to have nightmares every night from about 8 to 14 which then progressed to less frequent but with varying sleep paralysis experience in the mix. When I stay round my parents' house to visit, I never sleep with the lights out, only place in the world I can't sleep easy. I swear the place might as well be haunted, feels like there's something wrong there even if it's just in my mind
>>
>>64611792

I'd tell you to watch Berberian Sound Studio, but the cunts removed it from their service. The Last Shift was pretty good, and seems to get a lot of love in /tv/ horror threads, so you might as well check it out.
>>
>>64611796
>and that's it
The entire subway station from Silent Hill 3 is basically an entire level as a homage to Jacob's Ladder. The transformation into the hospital otherworld in SH2 is also clearly a reference to the hospital gurney scene.
>>
>>64610980
>it never does that until the end

It mimicks the neighbor's mom which is why he lets it in his bedroom without suspecting. The monster's not mimicking anybody at the end, it's already been defeated.

Do you even want horror? Or just gore porn?
>>
>>64611838
Keep telling yourself that.
>>
>>64611860

Paralysis and full on hallucinations. Sometimes I really don't see much. Just something out of the corner of my eye. Sometimes, I see blatant things right in front of/next to/on top of me. And yes, I can feel them, too. The worst is when, despite being paralyzed, I can slowly crawl my way out of bed, and make my way along the floor, inch by fucking inch taking every effort I have all while feeling absolutely terrified. Then I finally get to my door and hope once I'm out someone finds me and helps me, only for me to be suddenly back in my bed, still paralyzed, still under the effects. Oh yeah, gotta love when I get a double dose as well. That's when I actually wake up and really, truly am out of it. I'll fuck around for an hour or two, then when I go back to bed, surprise surprise, another bout.

Also, when you come out of it, are you unsure you're finally awake? I always need to ask someone over and over again to reassure me that I'm really awake and not dreaming anymore, and my head feels light and I'm still kinda out of it for an hour or so.
>>
>>64611796
Not really the entire school in the first game was modeled after the school from Kindergarten Cop and The Subway in SH3 and the intro to SH5 are almost shot for shot the same from Jacob's ladder.
that and yeah monster designs.
Not to say it's bad but saying SH isn't inspired by Jacob's ladder would be like saying Deadly Premonition wasn't inspired by Twin Peaks.
>>
>>64611874
Well, that's pretty cool. Still, they are very different. I know people who were disappointed in JL because they thought it was going to be SH: the movie. Their stories are different, they deal with different themes, etc. IMO JL is a lot more disturbing.
>>
>>64611980
false awakenings are a bitch
try sleeping on your stomach
it helps me some times
>>
>>64612052

That's the crazy part, anon. I never sleep on my back. I'm always on my side or stomach, and it still fucking happens. Hell, I honestly think the stomach ones are the worst, because I can't see them at all, but I know they're there and I can feel them sitting on the bed next to me, on my back, tugging at my hair. It's like, I'd at least rather know what the nightmare is, because the unknown is infinitely worst.
>>
>>64612117
fucking brutal...
>>
>>64611980
That's rough man. I used to get mostly just the in the dark stuff where I'd come out of a nightmare into what felt like an almost awakened state except I was being painfully eaten alive, or hands would be touching me then they'd start stabbing and scratching. Glad I didn't really get the hallucinations on top

Yeah I remember double dips, just loved triple layers of nightmares then a bout of paralysis wew lad

I always just had to deal with it for the most part. I shared a room with my brother but I didn't like waking him after I'd been through one. I'd just go to the bathroom and try the lights to reassure myself I was awake
>>
>>64612117
You dropped acid before? Apparently it can help with bad dreams and stuff.
>>
>>64612572

Yeah. I'm the poster that did acid before watching Jacob's Ladder. Strangely, I was always comfortable on it, enjoying it, even pushing my limits. I used to love to set up mirrors so I can get that infinite view and, at one friends house, do this with a blacklight while listening to some industrial/darkwave/EBM. That shit went on years after I had started having sleep paralysis, though. I've even checked to see if it was genetic, asking others in my family if they've had it. Turns out I'm the only one. Then again, a good chunk of them are black out drunks, so that could be why they never experienced it.
>>
Any good exorcism movies or are they all complete crap?, in the mood for one..
>>
>>64612684
I thought Insidious was good. That's pretty much an exorcism movie.
>>
>>64608643
>anything good come out last year?

No, not really. I'm in the same boat as you. Might as well watch the sequels, but I'm not paying for them.

I thought Insidious 3 was actually the best of the trilogy. I hated 1 and thought 2 was alright. Take that how you will. Haven't gotten around to Sinister 2 because I hated the fact that they basically used the douche from Slipknot as their monster. The latest Paranormal Activity was more of the same but it was better than some of the other sequels.
>>
>>64612684

The Exorcist 1 & 3

If you want possession and not exorcism The Possession of Michael King was good.

What was the name of that Spanish movie about the guy that would travel from town to town exorcizing spirits? It's fairly recent, probably two years old at most. That one was pretty good as well.
>>
>>64611913
I want to actually be scared that something is going to kill me. Creature features usually suck when you see the monster. Found footage is lame and almost always low quality. Weird possessions or ghostly presence in a house is just a couple jump scares and it needs to have a really good story to be worth watching.

Whatever happened to classic slasher films or the likes of Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street? I want something like that, but with a fresh twist. I watched the Scream TV series and really enjoyed it. Wrong Turn 1 made me shit my pants almost, one of my favourite movies. The Decent was a terrifying movie. The Hills have eyes is another good one (The remakes are just as good as the original).

I don't want horror porn, but I want some terrifying story to spook me.

I already watched the Babadook and i wanted to punch a wall when it was over. Fuck, that movie sucked.

>Are we friends?

It was exactly what I think Scream would have been like if it was released today and it only had a couple kind of lame moments, but all the kills were well done and the story was great.

Just finished watchign The Badlands.

That was phenomenal. Why doesn't that show up when I search for Lovecraftian movies?
>>
>>64613821
It's not a Lovecraft story. It's only Lovecraftian in the vaguest of senses. Suggestions of ancient pagan cults out in remote places. Unspeakable horrors beneath the earth. It's the sort of stuff HPL loved, but that's still a pretty loose connection, so most people don't really go around calling it Lovecraftian.

I mean, The Ghostbusters had a stronger Lovecraft connection than The Borderlands, but nobody really mentions that when they're talking about it.
>>
>>64609896
/tv/ has really really shitty taste in contemporary media. People can name a ton of good older directors, but I doubt many would be able to tell you why they were good.
>>
>>64613909
>It's not a Lovecraft story.
Neither is the Even Horizon, but it's still Lovecraftian.

Lovecraftian doens't mean it's supposed to be based on one of his books, it's just the overall theme.
>>
>>64614072
Right, but most people aren't going to label it Lovecraftian for search categories unless it's a stronger connection.

I don't even like the term Lovecraftian itself. There was a lot of good stuff in the genre before HPL even started writing. I prefer "weird fiction" or "weird horror."
>>
>>64614127
Ah, I see what you mean.

I wasn't thinking about "why it doesnt show up in search cues" anymore, sorry.

I just like the whole "ancient evil" when it's done right.

The double layered shit only happened to me once.

I had a terrifying nightmare about raping and murdering a girl I knew, plus some spooky 'Eyes Wide Shut' type stuff.

Then I 'woke up' into sleep paralysis, but I hear thousands of horrible voices in my head, which end up crecendoing to something like a huge crashing wave.

Then I wake up and it's the more typical hallucinations of creatures, leering faces and dead relatives surrounding my bed and someone/something strangling me from behind.

Then a small dark spot expanded from one corner of my room to consume everything until there was nothing but blackness.

Then I finally actually woke up.

That really sucked.

I can't find any horror movie scary. I literally can't. Because if it's supernatural, then I know such things cannot exist IRL and therefore I can't be scared. If it's not supernatural, then I know my glock and AK-47 can take care of the issue therefore I can't be scared.
I find war and disaster movies to be scarier than horror movies.

Everybody gets it. It's not a deep or clever film. People hate it because it took a great idea and executed it about as poorly as they could have.

This was compounded by the embarrassing levels of fanboy worship and hype it got across the internet, especially here and reddit.

It was an ok film, but it was elevated to false greatness by teenagers thinking it was the voice of their generation.

Fuuuuuuck man. The ending really spooked me out.

I had the opposite experience with Area 51. I gave the getting-into-the-base part some leeway, so that turned out okay, but once they were inside it felt weak and it made no sense.

(Spoilers)

I was hoping for more interesting science shit but it was more like, here's this room with some conspiracy-tard science, now let's run around a bit. They find aliens eventually and they're perpetually in the dark, with no real interesting encounter with them because they just want to kill you for some reason.
