Disney's just a cynical money-making enterprise. They could have easily hired someone with a modicum of creativity to come up with a story that at least tried to look new, but they didn't. Where Disney or JJ fucked up royally was in not designing a ton of new spaceships & weapons that they could sell as toys. Even the new Stormtroopers look like a tepid refresh. Hayden was fine in RotS, and the dialogue wasn't as consistently terrible as it was in AotC. I think that he just wasn't ready as an actor at that point and Lucas was at the peak of his autism - completely unaware of how to sell the romance. That just screwed it all up.
