And you're right, there is a ton of depth and sophistication in that scene. It presents Superman, and Superman's, in a conflicted way. Superman wants to save people from Zod; but at the same time he wants to save Zod because of his kinship and due to his optimistic upbringing.
Zod says he was made for war, and that's all he knows, whereas Superman had the benefit of being raised as Clark Kent, in a loving and American household where values not learned on Krypton were instilled to him.
When he is trying to stop Zod, he is doing so because he believes he can be helped in the end and redeemed. The truly tragic realization is that Zod *can't* be saved and this devastates Superman and everything he knows about the world. Thus he is faced with one ultimate choice to test him both physically and mentally. Either he tries to continue to subdue Zod at the cost of human lives lost, or he finishes Zod off to protect the world from destruction.
It's a fascinating dichotomy at play that can only be done by Snyder in the super hero film genre.
