why can't JJ just make better planets?

We'll probably see more adventurous planets as the series goes on. Episode 7 needed to play it safe to get everyone to buy in
>>
Because he don' give two fucks about Star Wars.
>>
>>64586021
it s literally worst than generic marvel movie
>>
>>64585247
The premise of TFA was Disney pulling the strings, fans have taken liberty to shit on the second trilogy at every turn, from the characters to the locations to writing. So they obliged the fans by using real world locations, props save for the occasional character, and better-ish writing. Disney wants the old fans to be happy with their product so they continue to buy it.
>>
I thought the idea of Jakku was cool, a planet that is a graveyard to a battle that happened years ago.
>>
>>64585247
He's not imaginative enough.

Don't forget you're dealing with a guy who basically re-made the original trilogy with Episode 7 after he re-made the Wrath of Khan.

And none of them were as iconic as the vehicles in the original trilogy, in fact they were all pieces of crap design wise, made by the tons in order to sell toys.

And it would be true. Are you saying that JJ actually had a Lava planet in the script before a rewrite? This is unbelievable. It must be a condition. I have never seen a creator so afraid of having their own ideas.
>>
>>64585247
I don't mind the planets, but they could have done better, yeah.

Like, Jakka could have easily been a junk world. And Starkiller Base could have easily been a landscape like the Moon. Maz Kanata could have easily had her place in an asteroid field or near a blackhole or something wild where only people like Han would go.

But they just played it safe.
>>
>>64586713
>It's really not thst hard to be creative.

The scene where the film arguably got its most creative on Hans freighter has been kicked to death, why the fuck would they bother now
>>
>>64586771

In Arndts original script the Starkiller base was on an imperial lava planet.
>>
>>64586814
No?
That scene was just trying to be GOTG.
>>
>>64586731
Yeah, that was nice. That was actually probably the first time I got the feeling of "freshness" about any of the locations in the movie, and it was at the very end.
>>
JJ made all the planets in TFA look like places on Earth, except for a few aliens.
Practical effects are better? Really?
Why are Maz and Snoke average looking mocap CGI then?
Then there is a totally shit CGI monster.
People listen to the official soundbytes and just accept them as facts.
All production techniques are valid if used wisely.
I genuinely cannot think of any environment or tech or alien in TFA which made me go "Wow!"
The environments mainly looked like Earth because they didn't tint them to emulate different sunlight and the trees/plants weren't alien enough.
The last scene looked like what it was. A scene filmed at a real location in Ireland.
The Star Wars universe never looked more parochial or banal that this.
Trying to make it look "real" = failure of the imagination

That's somehow even worse with regards to it being a planet weapon. How would they even do the extensive mining operations required to carve out the side of a lava planet for the gun if THE SURFACE OF THE PLANET IS MOLTEN?

>>
>>64586949
Sorry but you're an idiot.
Those films are pre CGI. They were highly original. They still feel more alien than a much more expensive film utilising much more advanced techniques.
You may despise the Ewoks, that goes without saying, but this old movie took a hell of a lot more time and effort to attempt to portray an alien society than anything in TFA.
TFA is a lazy copy which is afraid to do anything new.
>>
>>64585247
Because he wanted them to feel "real" in the sense boring real. This is what happens when you go to the opposite extreme of Lucas episode 2-3 "everything green screen bitches!"
>>

>>
>>64587112

You are an idiot, if you believe films didnt engage in fantastical locations before CG was commonplace.

What is set design? What are matte paintings?

The point is that the original movies and TFA now by extension were created in that the planets and worlds look real and therefore feel real to the audience.

You can claim they are plain and boring to look at, but I would rather take TFA planets over the sterile digital look that nearly every planet in the PT has, creative they might be but that still doesnt excuse they fact that they go against Star Wars original idea.

I liked that a lot too, but what really stuck with me was Ronan's ship. It was like a temple that flew. It would blast around on it's propulsion that looked so much cruder than the sleek Nova ships, and you just got the sense that it was something as ancient and ceremonial and symbolically important to Ronan and his position as the rest of his ensemble. A lot of the interior of it was real sets too, if you watch the behind the scenes.

I look at the new Star Wars, and there are no ship designs or sets that stand out to me really, because it's all just revamped OT stuff. The closest thing is Kylo Ren's design and lightsaber, but even those are just ok.

Therefore if more people like a movie it is necessarily better. What other measure are you going to propose for telling whether a movie is good? Any other standard is just arbitrary wank that you have pulled out of your ass, no matter what pseudo-intellectual bullshit you come up with to try and justify it ("ooh it's got good lighting", "ooh it's got good characterisation", "ooh it's got subtle forebearing and exquisite pacing", etc., ad nauseum).
