The premise of TFA was Disney pulling the strings, fans have taken liberty to shit on the second trilogy at every turn, from the characters to the locations to writing. So they obliged the fans by using real world locations, props save for the occasional character, and better-ish writing. I liked that a lot too, but what really stuck with me was Ronan's ship. It was like a temple that flew. It would blast around on it's propulsion that looked so much cruder than the sleek Nova ships, and you just got the sense that it was something as ancient and ceremonial and symbolically important to Ronan and his position as the rest of his ensemble. A lot of the interior of it was real sets too, if you watch the behind the scenes.
I look at the new Star Wars, and there are no ship designs or sets that stand out to me really, because it's all just revamped OT stuff. The closest thing is Kylo Ren's design and lightsaber, but even those are just ok.
