I think of it as a spy-thriller movie because that's what I think Nolan was trying to do, a film similar to a cold war thriller. I also think is his most accomplished movie, there's not a lot to complain about it. Visually terrific too, but I happen to think its just okay - perhaps because i dont like action scenes, and the film is filled with them.

Its a heist movie just with sci fi elements, I think the backlash it has is that people viewed it as pretentious in how it presented all the dream material when in reality all it is is a crux for the idea.

What I hate with Inception is that it shows really cool stuff at the beginning, when Leo is explaining to Page how dreams are. It had some nice potential, he's shaping the world as he wants it to be.
But when they do the actual heist, it's only plain, boring worlds. Almost all the action could have taken place in real life. Some shitty hotel, a rainy town, a mountain... All the cool stuff he does at the beginning is absent, there may be that hotel fight with the spinning room but that's it, the rest is realistic, not at all dream-like.
He wasted a nice potential.
