It also wouldn't have made sense for it to happen 30 years later. If they had made seven in the 90s, they could have worked it out, but the original cast is too old now.

A. It's too slow paced and "star warsy" for modern audiences and no one would take Thrawn seriously.
B. It's far too late for the OT actors to fit their roles in that storyline.
C. Disney doesn't want to be responsible for all of the Mara Jade porn.

But Mara Jade porn already exists thanks to Black Widow.
Because, and this is coming from an EU fan, the Thrawn trilogy has a lot of great characters and contributed a lot to the future of the EU but is overall pretty boring.
Also it took place only 5 years after Jedi, so instead of having a generation of new blood ready to go, they'd have needed to recast the big 3, and we'd have to wait for several movies for Jacen and Jaina to be adults and do anything interesting.

Regardless, there are a few scenes that I think would be really cool in live-action.
