The only thing Avatar did right was 3D. It was actually pretty good compared to modern "flickering in action" 3D. It also added a layer of unreality to the cartoon story.

If Cameron wanted Avatar to be bigger than Star Wars he should have gotten to work immediately on creating an expanded universe to sell to kids and autists. Say what you will about the quality of Star War's EU, it gave it the staying power to survive movie droughts and keep people interested.
