Simple
Low budget, had a Canada tv station broadcast, with US first run syndication. While it was not as cheap as B5 (Which wins the record for cheap but in any way quality production) it was much cheaper then Farscape or Xena, and Much much much Cheaper then Star Trek.

First two (and maybe three...) seasons were legit scifi (for cheap syndication anyway). Then the showrunners left and Sorbo took over turning it into hercules in space.

Andromeda was during that nice early midday action block on Sundays. I don't even really remember when Farscape aired but I think it was more in the night.

After the first five or six episodes it finds its groove and gets super comfy. Season four starts off a little uncomfortable because of stupid network interference, but it gets better before the end.
