Han's (and Leia's) treatment in RotJ is one of those fundamental issues I mentioned. But, again, at least VI creates a thematic capstone that brings the story together to a satisfying (if very uneven) conclusion. What does VII do? It drags out old characters we never needed to see again and pulls them through a series of break-neck action sequences with very little tension fronted by a character that's ten times as much of a "non-character" as Han was in Return of the Jedi.
VII is a fucking mess every step of the way. It has competent production, but that's about it.

You are comparing the end of a trilogy with the first movie of another trilogy. Your comparison is completely flawed. The only thing this new movie needed to do was establish new characters that are likeable and it did it. Kylo Ren is the most interesting villain Star Wars has ever had. Poe's and Finn's chemistry was perfect. And even Rey who always gets criticised for being a Mary Sue has a likeable personality.
The movie is unoriginal, but it is entertaining, unlike half of ROTJ.
The sequels suck, HOWEVER, can we put an end to the meme that Revenge of the Sith was the decent one? Only the last lightsaber battle was good, and maybe Windu but that's all it deserves credit for.

Her only flaw is the prerequisite "Rejecting the call to adventure" that every Hero requires at least once.
Mary Sue just means that she is written like how a fan fiction writer would write a new story with themselves as an insert. It doesn't mean she literally is JJ/Kasdan's author insert, it just means she is written like one.

im gonna get hate and shit, but i rewatched the unedited vhs of the orgininals, and i think the high highs of ROTJ far outweigh the lowest lows. i like how the first half combined the fun adventure style of the ANH and later had very deep and meaningful scenes and overall it felt the most exciting and engaging.

When you watch the OT, Vader clearly cares more about Obi Wan than even his son. Everytime Luke does something impressive or surprising, Vader just mentions Obi-Wan and his training and opinions and shit. The dude clearly lost something important to him. In Ep. III, which is a great movie btw, Anakin hopes Obi-wan remained loyal to chancellor because he doesn't want to have to face him. He knows Obi-wan is the shit, and he's even jealous because he assumes Padme feels the same way.
They should have made Obi-wan and Anakin more like equals and both badass. Anakin is too unlikeable to care about his loss.
