Now that the prequels have been vindicated, can we talk about Lucas' other works that were ahead of their time?

If anything, the Special Editions prove George actually DID care about the Star Wars legacy and having a consistent narrative vision.

Otherwise he wouldn't have cared if Anakin's ghost looked like Hayden or if Han shot first. If it was just a cash-grab, he would've released a remastered version and left it at that.

There's no reason to prefer the unaltered originals unless you're major league asshole.

>inb4 contrarian

Get a new argument, redditors.
>>
But Vader was redeemed as a grown man, so he should've had the same actor that was in the de-masking scene. Obi-Wan is still an old fucking man as a force ghost.

OP is only making the point that the sheer illogic of George's decisions prove that he was sincerely trying to make the films match some idea he had in his head, however misguided that idea may have been.

Yeah this is why there are 0 contradictions and inconsistencies between the OT and the PT, right?

But he says "there's no reason to enjoy the unaltered originals". If he meant to imply the alternations were flawed, then there would be reasons.

Does sound like The Phantom Edit. They also cut out a lot of Anakin's lines to make him less "gee whiz".

Sadly the movie is still pretty bad. There's only so much an editor can do.

>>
what changes do you think will be made for the 4k edition?
>>
There are Semi-Despecialized versions on torrent sites that take the Despecialized versions and add the improved special effects shots back in where appropriate, without fucking with the story. So you get the improved space battles and creatures without Greedo shooting first or Jedi Rocks or Prequel Anakin or anything. There's even two different versions of ROTJ so you can choose Yub Nub or Victory Celebration. Some of the full autists here will still nitpick them but for my money, they're the best way to watch the original trilogy, along with the Anti-Cheese edits for the prequel trilogy. Did a marathon of all six before going to see VII and it was pretty great.
>>
>>64508739
But it ends on a higher note. Endings are everything.

Ironically the people shitting on the special editions are millennial redditors who have most likely never seen the films in their original forms, certainly not in theaters. Some of the most memorable scenes in the original are absolutely atrocious due to excessive matte lines and shit. Hoth scene and basically every action scene in ROTJ looks terrible in the original versions. Most of the awful memeshit (not counting Jedi Rocks) like the fuckhuge Jabba Palace door or R2 behind the rocks came much later, in DVD and BD re-rerealeases

You are now aware that there is a range of atmosphere on Jupiter and Saturn where the atmospheric pressure is the same as sea level on earth (1 bar).

You are now aware that the gravity at this range is almost the same as on earth.

You are now aware you are extracting oxygen out of an atmosphere that is 70% nitrogen.

You are now aware it is possible there is a gas giant where this level of atmosphere may contain breathable oxygen and another noble gas (ie. Nitrogen).

You are now aware cloud city is bouyant/floating at this range on bespin.

I don't think you're a contrarian, I think you're a late 80s to early 90s guy who was first exposed to Star Wars when you saw the 1997 editions and those are the versions you like. You went back later and watched the theatricals and aren't as big a fan of them because, in your mind, they aren't the original and best ones.
I have buddies who hate Yub Nub and love the Victory Celebration theme because they heard the latter first and find Yub Nub annoying.

It's a fair enough opinion, but the theatricals are the originals, and while many of the changes since then are simply aesthetic, others are fucking retarded (Greedo shooting first, two RotJ songs being entirely changed, Obi-Wan's Krayt call), and to say "There's no reason to prefer the unaltered originals unless you're major league asshole." is pretty fucking ignorant.

And on the topic of ignorance, that picture is from The Empire Strikes Back, which was released in 1980, not 1977.

I used to feel the same way until I saw the original edition in full. You finally see the sunset as the Slave I blasts off with Han aboard and the reveal of the beauty of the sun along with the realization that they lost is genuinely poetic. This is lost if you can see the sunset the whole time.
>>
>>64512127
the blu ray is the 3rd revision of the special editions you 14 year old
>>
There are changes in the special editions that improve the film. The better explosions, for example. But there are plenty of needless changes as well. Adding in a ton of CG creatures all over and robots slapping each other around in the background, and more stupid terrible jokes. (hey, lets have some guy in the background lose control of his CG creature and get flung in the air. And hey rather than just showing the ominous outside of Jabba's Palace, lets have a CG animal eat another CG, and the BURP! It will be HILARIOUS!)

As >>64512281 mentioned, the aesthetic changes are fine. But the others? No reason for them

Nope, I own it too. Its a golden box though. Never did know what the difference was but some of that CGI that was added still pisses me off till this day. I'm hoping one day Disney will release a theatrical cut with just a few of the CGI that actually makes the movie look better and not all that shit that was added that looks like a sore thumb.

"These current defacements are just the beginning. Today, engineers with their computers can add color to black-and-white movies, change the soundtrack, speed up the pace, and add or subtract material to the philosophical tastes of the copyright holder. Tomorrow, more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with “fresher faces,” or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor’s lips to match. It will soon be possible to create a new “original” negative with whatever changes or alterations the copyright holder of the moment desires. The copyright holders, so far, have not been completely diligent in preserving the original negatives of films they control. In order to reconstruct old negatives, many archivists have had to go to Eastern bloc countries where American films have been better preserved.

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten."

Bump.

Also, consider this: my woman watched the movies with me, having never seen any beyond PM when she was a kid.

She actually didn't know Palpy was the Emperor and she enjoyed a badass twist I was never able to, because even before the PT, I knew the Emperor's real name and past (from the EU I suppose, though I never read these books, but my younger brother did so maybe he told me).

There was at one time a version of Empire where Luke yells "AAAAAAHHHH!!!..." when he starts falling after letting go of the pole because Vader has him beaten and cornered.

To me that was worse than Han Shooting first because it fucked up one of, if not THE most iconic scene in move history.

They have since changed it back so it's all good now.

Addendum: In the latest Blu Ray version of Ep 4 it has been re-edited so it's not exactly clear who shoots first
>>
The new celebration music is awful. I didn't know Ewoks were peruvian
>>
>>64512868
It's a pretty childish scene, save for his interaction with the force ghosts, which is still very lighthearted and uplifting.
The song is actually very climactic; it crescendo's near the end with huge vocals. The galaxy is saved (for now) and Luke is happy with his friends around him. The song reflects this.
Maybe you have a problem with the scene as a whole.
>>
>>64505201

OT kind of is though in the context of the special edition because literally just a few minutes later Han Runs into Jabba and the just talked and joked around a bit.

Meaning Han would have killed Greedo for no reason.
>>
>>64513088
HA
>>
>>64513149

They have changed it a third time.

As of now it's not clear who shoots first.

G.L. didn't want to make Han look like a cold blooded murderer in the special edition because he actually meets Jabba later and and Jabba doesn't try to kill him or anything and actually let's him go.

Han Shooting first in the original version makes sense because it is implied that Jabba would have him executed on the spot but in the special edition that's not the case at all.

Changing the VA for that perfect line makes me kind of sad.

The changing the emperor also kind of sucks too because it doesn't blend in well.

In hindsight I get why GL kept changing them because if you think about it, it is the ONLY film franchise that has remained theatrically relevant for three generations.

Maybe you could re release Wizard of Oz for kids today but there aren't too many films out there that have not been rebooted with completely new versions.

Not really. Greedo says something about Jabba just taking his ship, Han responds with "over my dead body" and Greedo says he's been looking forward to that. It's Greedo who's trigger-happy in this situation, not Jabba. Greedo and Han had a beef, and Han shot Greedo to keep Greedo from shooting him. This has nothing to do with Jabba or any scene he might be included in later, except that Greedo was also hoping to get paid.

lucas did the special editions to prove a fucking point and people are understanding it now more than ever.
hes a genius.
>>
>>64512776

That's exactly why. He didn't want R2 to feel less special this far into the movie.

>so he still would have murdered him for no reason.

No... He would have murdered him for a very good reason, to stop his own murder. What Jabba was going to do holds no fucking relevance, because the way Greedo was acting he wouldn't let Han live long enough to face Jabba. He was just waiting for Han to make some kind of move so he could justify shooting him. They made it so obvious that you can tell even through the subtitles and alien mask for god's sake.
>>
>>64513888
nah your full of shit

My biggest problem with 2004 is that godawful jabba song in RotJ. Literally ruins the movie for me.
>>
>>64513622
>Han Shooting first in the original version makes sense because it is implied that Jabba would have him executed on the spot but in the special edition that's not the case at all.

Bullshit, Jabba doesnt give a fuck about a bounty hunter greedo

Replace old man by ewan, problem sovled

force ghosts is bullshit in my opinion

Is silat useful at all? Can they beat anyone who knows BJJ, boxing or muay thai?

There's plenty of stuff like your pic which is super jarring. The worst part is they've just copy-pasted a rock next to it, blown it up and it's super low resolution copy to be seen in the BD.

nitrogen isnt a nobel gas its just very inert but i like ya post mang
>>
>>64512329
Ive got the superior 2006 DVD limited edition release. It comes with both the 2004 version you like AND the theatrical versions (though they are only in letterboxed 4:3 rather than true widescreen)
>>
>>64512868
Yu Nub plays into the idea of how miniscule and grass roots the rebellion is. The Empire has been beaten (for now), and our heroes enjoy a moment of respite before embarking on another inevitable quest. Having a huge victory celebration across galaxies where the Empire still has forces is dumb.
>>
>people on this board are actually praising the prequels

Reddit really has taken over

>Jabba would just take his ship

Hiw does that make sense?
>>
>If it was just a cash-grab, he would've released a remastered version and left it at that.

Trying... not to... reply... seriously
>>
>>64513841
>Instead they play a literally who gang members
It's even worse than that; they're in JJ's awful scooby-doo monster chase scene

Why did we even need to see the Rathtars?
>>
>>64516461
You already did
>>
>>64508960
wrong, the last time he was ajedi was when he turned back to the light side of the force and redeemed himself by saving Luke and killing the Emperor.

Luke never considered him truly dark, and still considered him a Jedi.

And Vader redeemed himself by proving him right, died with his mask off, with his mark of the Dark Side off, and was then given a proper warrior's funeral

Thought that word salad would get you replies? Well, look who's the meme-cucked cis pleb reddi-tier human garbage now.

So Anakin does like one good act after being a murdering evil fuck for like 25 years and he gets to become a force ghost?
>>
>>64514045
it is, they put a matte painting there in the original.
>>
>>64516588
yes
>>

You need to read some chick tracts. They adequately explain the system so that it makes sense for heathens.
>>
>>64516560
holy shit, that angle.

why didn't they just use real people from the get go?
>>
there are some changes, like
>>64516560

that are actually good, would also like to see this fan edit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRsDLIPVsic

in a less offensive special edition.

10 cents etc

There is literally nothing wrong with Yub Nub.

Wait, what?

That was the best scene of the movie.
>>
>>64517183
Doesn't fit the tone as much.
>>
>>64505388
Vader wasn't a Jedi. Anakin was. Anaking died that day on the lava planet.

Evidence of this can be found in the fifth movie (which you redditors love) when the emporer says "He is the child of Anakin Skywalker" to Vader. Why wouldn't he just say "your child"?

The only thing I like more in the special edition is the edits to Cloud City so it looks less claustrophobic.
>>
>>64505275
>>64505201
Some of the changes were alright. The varying quality of the special edition changes were a lot like the quality of all of George's ideas. Half of them were good - sometimes great - and the other half were complete shit.

He just needed someone to slap him every time he convinced himself one of his bad ideas was good.
>>
>>64506269
Kanjiklub is seriously the worst name you could come up with

>hey we're an asian space gang
>hey lets incorporate the word Kanji into it
>>
>>64518000
I agree.

For me I prefer
ANH- unaltered
ESB- either one is fine, but unaltered winsout because of "bring my shuttle" and no ROTJ huttle footage.
ROTJ- I prefer the SE- ONLY because the very last scene is so vastly improved. All the other changes suck, but the first time I saw the SE, the end felt so much more joyous than before. That single change literally makes ROTJ a much better movie.
