Wouldn't call him pretentious. I don't think he has any pretentions of being smarter and deeper than anyone else. He is, and I mean this in the most positive sense, just an incredibly unusual person with an incredibly unusual thought process and his movies reflect that.

He's creative, inquisitive, and entirely humble. Don't be insecure just because his movies have layers. I'd love to get a beer with Lynch.
>>
If you've ever heard him speak, you'd know he is the nicest, most un-pretentious guy there is.

A Pretentious Hack that makes movies like a Transcedental Genius.
>>
>>64503770
anyone who calls lynch pretentious knows nothing about him and just bases that off watching his films.
>>
Some people are simply weird, but Lynch is the type of weird with the ability to translate weirdness into art.

I thought he was a hack till I watched this

http://www.abc.net.au/arts/blog/arts-desk/filmmaker-and-artist-David-Lynch-between-two-worlds/default.htm
>>
I like him as a person but I think he's overrated as a director.

He always looks full of anger, ready to explode. I guess TM helps him not going on a killing spree.

God, do I hate this word.Anyone who describes his work as transcendental is automatically qualified as pretentious .

Lynch is a conservative artist teasing the terrors of modernism from out the human soul.

It's better than a fucking disco ball, Edgar.
>>
>>64503770
He's not pretentious, or he's really hiding it well. I don't lightly use the term genius and when you watch Inland Empire, you can't scream genius really.
He is a very talented Artist and one of my favorite directors, that is for sure. I'm very excited to see what he'll do with the new season of Twin Peaks.
>>
>>64505756

He supported Obama in the last two elections and his depictions of conservative Americana are usually deeply subversive. Wouldn't call him a conservative. More of a realist with an idealistic streak.
>>
>>64505790
yes

Someone gets it.

I met him earlier last year and had an opportunity to talk quite a bit. Super nice guy, really interesting.

Although... he was a little too preachy on the Transcendental meditation.

The Dark Knight is a great film, but Inception is absolutely pretentious nonsense.

>plebian
>>

I agree, it isn't plebian, but it is overrated.
>>
>>64506341

I always felt like Inception was an incredibly unremarkable heist movie with the dream element awkwardly tacked on but never used for anything interesting. It's really kind of a shame because you could have done something very creative with the premise of people breaking into dreams to gather information but... well, he didn't.
>>
>>64506679
Exactly. It was a medicore heist movie, in a dream world... Apparently. WHERE YOU CAN DO ANYTHING?
But why does everything they do not make sense and suck?
And why does it not seem dream like at all?
>>
>>64505166
So fucking operator. I wanna be a film director.
>>
>>64506679

I kind of liked the idea of him confronting not his wife, but his distorted, hysterical memory of his wife, in his own unsconsciousness. Everything before and after that was both boring and falsifyingly dramatic without real tension.

>>64512839
Wild at Heart started off really strong but I felt it kinda lost it in the last third. I liked it when it was about Sailor and Lula going on a road trip to Vegas, getting into weird situations and being chased by excentric criminals. Once they got to the bank robbery and sailors prison sentence the whole movie kinda lost its momentum.

Just watched Eraserhead... where should I go from here?

It was an easy film to digest desu, wasn't that mind-blowing and even plebs would be able to understand it thematically, but the imagery was on-point.
>>
>>64520571
Lynch films (all great films, really, but especially Lynch films) aren't about a ''point'' that you get. They are not a math equation.

Falling in love with a Lynch film is a personal thing. The close analysis comes later, and even then that analysis should be only for you.
>>
>there are people on this board RIGHT NOW who don't think Lost Highway is his best

literally one of the greatest film interpretations of a dream ever made. it is a flawless masterpiece.
>>
>>64520665
You can confidently go through his filmography chronologically. He hasn't really made a ''bad'' film as such.
>>
>>64520571

I really think it's about how reality is what we perceive to be our lives, but we're in fact living vicariously through our fantasies and media consumption. Once the veil is broken reality is actually a dark evil that we can't understand.
>>
>>64519900
