Have you seen in and didn't like it or you haven't and you want to know if it's worth it?

Overall I liked it on all levels. In terms of aesthetic and atmosphere. It connected this feeling of a sterile, soulless dystopia with absurd humor and energy, yet all the energy that was there was more like that of a machine than of a living organism. It had some pretty curious visual direction, in terms of cut shots, extreme close ups and shifts between very static and dynamic camera work. As for the story it and characters these reflect themes which are both on the collective and more personal level. The first one of course relates to authority, bureacraucy and its absurdities which are reflected through the visual elements and tone. On the personal it's about not being able to deal with reality, I kind of like that theme and somehow enjoy stories about people trying to deal with the nature of their surroundings and sometimes fighting and winning against it while sometimes they lose. But in each case it's a challenge for their characters which will probably greatly effect them. In this case the character never really tries to fight or even really run in real life, yet he percieves him self as that kind of character in his own mind. Hence the visualizations of him as a winged knight.

I like Gilliam's style overall, his expressive aesthetic, the absurd characters yet in this case it just connected to a setting and narrative I enjoyed the most out of all his films (besides the last one, being the only one I haven't seen). Also, I think this one created an interesting contrast being between the absurd humor and depressing setting.

>>
>>64502417
I'll be honest. I don't know what spirit of the beehive is. Introduce me to something new unintentionally I guess. Which did you think that was?

Salo was just a well shot film that was unflinching. Felt almost trendsetting in a way, but I can probably think of plenty better to put in it's spot whenever I make another mosaic.

The films in order from left to right.

The Rover, Midnight Express, Charlie Wilson's War

Mississippi Burning, Salo, O Brother Where Art Thou

Amores Perros, Cider House Rules, Killer Joe
>>

Spirit of the beehive is one of my favorite movies, this is my chart btw >>64498213 it's middle bottom, i thought it was middle top on your chart.
Thank you for your opinion on why you like Salo, have you seen more italian films of that era? (Bertolucci, Fellini, Antonioni and more of Pasolini)?

i didn't like the eel, what did you like of it?
ratcatcher is good
shock corridor is good
happy together is good
the cranes are flying (if that is what middle right is) is ok, have you watched letters never sent?

menilmotant is a good short, but kirsanoffs full length films are usually better
and the friends house iran film is alright

Also 2/4 for anime movies, 3/3 animated movies, 2/2 live-action series, 6/7 live-action movies, 1.5/3 vidya.

The bottom-middle is Urusei Yatsura 2: Beatiful Dreamer. It's by the director of Angel's Egg and Ghost in the Shell, but made before those two.

The thing is it kind of requires you to have seen the original series - Urusei Yatsura the movie is a spin off. It's a romanti sci-fi comedy. The premise is that mc tries to get cute girls but he has an alien girl following him that he doesn't like but is the only one actually into him.

The second movie based on it was quite different, while it still has comedy and it has the same quirky characters and relations between them the story and atmosphere is a lot more surreal. So it's kind of like if David Lynch made a spin off film to Johnny Bravo.

Getting into the series itself might be a bit hard. It's early 80s cheesy anime humor and the series is pretty long (190 eps). You don't have to watch them all, but if you want to get to know all the characters in the show you have to watch at least a few dozen or find a list which tells you which episodes introduce new characters.

Basically, if you're not really into anime or Oshii specifically I don't know if I would recommend it. You can try watching it because it isn't really tied but the film doesn't go out of its way to introduce the pretty big and diverse cast, so you might be a bit lost.
>>
>>64506138
Got anything to recommend then so I can expand a bit. As you can see in general I like films with stunning visuals.

>>
>>64506309

saw pictures of the old world not so long ago, i loved every second of it but i don't put it in my chart because it's a documentary and that's for another chart i guess, i don't know about the other tho 1/1
>>
>>64506216

I might give it a try, thanks for the thorough explanation. I don't know if I'll watch the whole 190 episodes though, it's pretty long, but the description you made for the movie made me want to try it.
>>
>>64502850
Personally for me it was brilliantly done. The pace was perfect; as is with most weerasethakul films. The story was also engaging plus he added a bit of mysticism in there which he'd continue to do with his later works. As the other anon mentioned, yes it was comfy but what did it for me was the surreal nature of the film.

>>64504175
Out 1 is on rutracker I think. I watched it years ago through piratebay. Some rivette films are on rutracker.
>>
>>64507458
I actually checked. If you go on the wiki page it mentions each episode that introduces a new character from the main cast. You can just check out those and the first couple ones.
