In this particular flick, the lightsaber (and perhaps other objects) are "imbued" with some sort of psychic imprint (don't fucking ask me why).
Remember Rey's force vision when she first finds it? It even calls out to her from upstairs in the bar, AND opens a locked door in the basement to let her into the room where it is contained.
If untrained Rey can sense it from that distance, then trained Kylo can definitely sense it in the forest a few yards away.
