It was actually an alright movie, it just tried too hard to be funny. It's like I could see the writers laughing at their own jokes.

really eh? felt like a pretty huge retread of his last few films at least in terms of its visuals. kind of just felt like a bit of a mess to me though I did like the structuring framework of a guy out in the desert revisiting his life and trying to frame it in a way that would give it some kind of coherency. But yeah I was a little underwhelmed. A friend of mine who owns a theater screened it for us after hours which was pretty nice but I think it's probably Malick's weakest.
>>64496497
It's brilliant. As good as the rest of his films, just insular in its way, something of a narrow focus, at least on the surface but with eternal spiritual themes.
>>64495941
>Quentin's narration
Fucking WHY
it was literally the worst thing I've heard

I wouldn't say self-parodic, but his style has been exhausted at this point. So far this exact distinct style has been done for his past three films. It looks nice, but I'd like to see something different. I think he's getting noticeably more experimental with his camera and editing, which is great. He's finally done away with almost all dialogue, I can only count a handful of times where we can hear characters talk to each other. Malick's substance is within the whispered monologues and characters action, but I liked it when it was more balanced like in The Tree of Life. The style also fits it better.
I'm still unsure if it's his weakest or not. Probably his most philosophical film so far, delves into the self. It's probably a contender for his weakest since his comeback, but it's still pretty good. I like how it doesn't have the answers, and it ends without a big change of the main character's direction. Because doing otherwise would be horribly pretentious in my opinion.
I don't think Malick is exhausted per se, but he has made the shift in story towards his own life. So far he's made three films that are in some sense auto biographical. Which worries me. I don't think he could go back doing something that isn't auto biographical, and that he's coming up on the end of his career. Who knows. I hope he stops working with Chivo for the betterment of both of them.
>>64496817
Why do you care for structure? Do you demand structure from Tarkovsky when he presents his dreams and memories in The Mirror? Do you scream at Mekas because even he admits there is no structure in As I Was Moving Ahead...? Do you not realize this is akin to going into an art gallery and saying that a Monet or a van Gogh are terrible because they are a deliberate break from traditional formalism in terms of their aesthetic? Like one of the screencaps said, the movie is an attempt to recreate the thoughts and memories of a confused man constantly yearning for some greater purpose. A reflection, in the Tarkovskian sense, of the artist and in turn an expression of how he and many of us view reality.
>The Force Awakens
Will take me a while to format my feelings to it.
>>64496861
You just saved me $15, I had no idea.
>>64496861
He just has to have a cameo somewhere...
But it was really the reveal that made the movie fall apart imo
>>64496920
It felt pretty clear to me that the movie was meant to be Bale's memories coming on after that initial scene out in the desert. It seemed like each title card was meant to be a new segment of memory that he was processing himself, translating his memories into a coherent structure. I felt as though the entire film was his memories and within the actual world of the movie it's entirely just him in the desert alone.
Anyway, either way I agree with everything this guy said:
>>64496937
I wish he'd go back to the masterpiece material of stuff like New World and Thin Red Line. This new autobiographical bent feels more like he's making movies for himself than an audience, and that's an okay thing to do when it works, but this one only did so intermittently I thought.
P.s. don't be a dick and shitpost
>>64496953
jesus christ you sound like an asshole. for one, I never said I needed structure but it's clear this movie has a guiding framework. Malick just retread To The Wonder with almost no innovations despite using a different game at moments and being a little more downbeat than he generally is. Anyway, you guys sound like insufferable cunts who can't give a measured view of an artist who has obviously released one of their weakest efforts. Chill.
>>64497099
>I never said I needed structure but it's clear this movie has a guiding framework.
What are you even saying?
>Malick just retread To The Wonder with almost no innovations
You are a moron who can only see visual similarities. To the Wonder is about as different from Knight of Cups as The Tree of Life is in terms of its narrative and themes. While To the Wonder is a movie about love and forgiveness, examining both the physical romance and divine love, Knight of Cups is about the loss and aspiring for spirituality in a materialist world. To the Wonder has essentially three protagonists (Neil, Marina an the priest) to Knight of Cups clear single author surrogate; while To the Wonder has the characters learning about the film's central themes of love and forgiveness and each changing by the end, Knight of Cups' lone protagonist wanders through his life empty for the most part making the same mistakes until he (or at least the audience) reaches a realization of the acceptance of the nature of reality, and even at the end you're left with his ambiguous fate ("Begin..." again?). If you can look beyond the cinematography and semi-autobiographical similarities you will find both movies to have very different and rich philosophical contexts.
>Anyway, you guys sound like insufferable cunts who can't give a measured view of an artist who has obviously released one of their weakest efforts. Chill.
Says the person who has no argument beyond repeating those words over and over again until he thinks he can convince anyone. Go away if you feel this insecure over not having any argument.

>>64496525
>the only way to be happy is to love, but love brings more pain than happiness
>Bums and cripples are ugly
The priest addresses this in a very Christian manner. That pain is good and relates one to the universal. It puts love into context. The poor and crippled are in his last three films. His last two have a specific reason in relation to Christianity. Terry admires these misfits for their suffering and being able to continue on. It's supposed to be humbling to the main character is so far in despair that he can't see this notion of suffering. He, like you, doesn't understand this. Do you think Terry threw in the priest's scene for no reason? Beyond what little his films have philosophically, you can really trace Malick's thought through Kierkegaard's notions of love and the self.
>>64497046
>This new autobiographical bent feels more like he's making movies for himself than an audience
I like it, because he brings us closest to another human being's real experience. Although the notions of love in The New World are among the greatest. Terry just wants to communicate these complex ideas as best as possible, and the greatest way to do that is from experience. I think his auto biographical films have a very distinct beauty to them. A realness that might get a bit weighed down by genre and plot.
>P.s. don't be a dick and shitpost
S-sorry?

I don't agree but it's your interpretation. You certainly expanded on a confusing sentence so that's cool, wasn't shitposting.
>>64497046
>he's making movies for himself than an audience
Can't agree. While those films are sumptuous, grand, etc these are vitally personally resonant. One may often feel like he's sleepwalking through life getting distracted by the ultimately meaningless disctractions of the material world at great personal cost to the larger more edifying spiritual self. It felt like a modern sermon and it spoke to me.
>>64496937
>I don't think he could go back doing something that isn't auto biographical
Like say, a documentary about the creation of the universe and a film about the music scene in Austin, TX?
>>64497637
Except behind the polemics there is truth. The silliness of the post is only a mask for an actual understanding of Terry and his films. Some of what he says is true and he knows it.
>>64497736
>Like say, a documentary about the creation of the universe>implying that's auto-biographical.
>>64497736
You got me. Truth about the documentary, but the untitled project is still about a love triangle. Then again documentaries are very separate from someones purely imagined film.
>>64497884
Terry's autobiographical trilogy is done. He's charted his life from childhood (The Tree of Life), through his young loves and relationships (To the Wonder) and now to his Hollywood experience and general restlessness with life (Knight of Cups).
