This is exactly what's wrong with this board. I noticed a while back that people always seem to parrot these same sorts of criticisms and assumed it was a meme or something.
A couple of weeks ago I read the wikipedia page for RLM and then found out that that's where all these losers come from.
You watched some amateur youtubers and assumed that because these amateurs have a lot of views on their videos that their criticisms are 100% valid. You also assumed that if you parrot them then you are smart.
It shows the intellectual infancy that is all too common not only on this board, but in society. At least memers are playing the idiot. You think that reappropriating some argument you heard by amateur film enthusiasts makes YOU a film critic.
Not every character has to be some sort of well fleshed out person with a deep and rich history. In fact not every character has to be anything. The thing about art is that there tend to not be many "rules" per se. And these "rules" when broken can make the resulting art all the more powerful!
So parroting some amateurs with a youtube channel doesn't make you smart. And to answer their question, because it's stupid to ask this about Maul, Qui Gon Jinn is a Jedi who is more concerned with the ends than the means. We see this by him willing to cheat to get Anakin, and willing to train him on his own. We can also tell that he might not be the best jedi given in the first scene he fails to detect danger. This former trait helps to reveal the trouble that is training Anakin by forcing conflict with Yoda over it. The latter helps to foreshadow his early demise to Maul. That's good writing! and all without recourse to his profession or role in the movie.

Maul's entire character in TPM is mystical and that's on purpose. All we know is he's the emperor's new little hitman and he looks kind of cool. He tracks them down and we're left wondering what's going to happen.
His hallmark moment is when he faces both Qui Gon and Obi Wan and reveals an unprecedented double-bladed saber and an aggressively athletic fighting style as the music swells and we realize we're facing a new breed of Sith.
The guy didn't say much and we don't know so much about him but he is fairly legendary thanks to the impact of his character. I don't know how on Earth you could consider his entrance and fight "boring", it was amazing.

Sure, but the to me the analogy is perfect for showing why he is bad. A big criticism for movies these days is them feeling like video games. Like having big action scenes with characters that we are not set up to care about.

It wasn't a climax to anything. It wasn't even at the end. The death star blowing up is a climax, because that is set up from the very beginning as a bad thing. We see vader being a cunt, we see him kill millions of innocent people with the death star. So we don't like, and we root for our heros when the try to blow it up.

nowhere did I say that. I'm criticizing a poor and often trotted out form of argumentation. In fact, in lots of fiction considered really good by critics and readers alike characters can represent forces of nature or evil or what have you. I'm not necessarily married to this, but I think you could make the claim that Maul does a good job of advancing the Star Wars mythos. He serves in a sense as the ultimate end of what the dark side is: pure hate. Now is that the best way to interpret it? Idk, but it sure seems plausible, and I do think I like that.
