obviously there are a whole load of different rounds that can be cambered at that caliber. since cartridge sizes vary greatly, not all of them are going to be compatible. that doesn't alter that 5.56x45 nato is .223 caliber, and significantly smaller (in diameter, since that is what caliber measures) than 9mm nato

Doesn't this have something to do with the NATO rounds being hotter (packed with more gunpowder) and not a size difference in the ammunitions? At least that's what I gathered when I was doing some research before purchasing my AR15 (I got a 5.56-spec barrel one of course).
