why are the planets so close to each other that they could conviniently be placed in the same frame?

Dont forget, Takodana, the planet of Maz Memenata, is also in the same system and the other planets can be seen exploding from the pirate castle.

You'd think the hideout of the galaxie's most "dangerous" pirate would be far away from the core worlds of the republic.

Also we dont care about some planets we have never seen before or hear about afterwards.

TFA is such a fucking mess. On par with the prequels for slightly different reasons.
>>
>>64468351
The whole Star Wars™ Galaxy® (© Disney) is now retconned to be a Firefly-like solar system with tons of inhabitable planets. ;^)
>>
>>64468351
Something that really pissed me off was that we can clearly see starkiller firing one big beam, but then we see many smaller beams when the planets are getting destroyed.

Firefly takes place in 5-star system with a central star, two stars in "close" orbit and two more stars in a more distant orbit.

The kind of visibility you see in TFA isn't even possible between the moons of Jupiter or Saturn, let alone planets in the same system. When Earth and Venus' orbits are closest (will happen in about 20 years, actually) it still just looks like an extra-bright star.

Everything about the Starkiller and all of its scenes makes Neil DeGrasse Tyson cry.
>>
>>64468351
It's a typical JJ-ism. Like the look at Vulcan from Spock's ice planet in Trek09
>>
Does anyone has a picture of the starkiller base absorbing its sun?
The sun is laughable tiny and starkiller base is to fucking close to it. Starkiller base would burn like hell being this close to a fucking star. But instead there is snow on its surface.

Jarjar Abrams is the worst offender of the trope about sci-fi writers having no sense of scale. "Yes I know he is the director and not the writer."

But as director he is in charge of the visuals largely and every single recent film he has done sacrifices any kind of sane scientific reasoning for the sake of visual effects. Everything about the starkiller makes no fucking sense. Just like instant warp drives, falling from lunar orbit in minuets, transporters that work at superluminal speeds and across half the galaxy...

JJ movies have no sense of patience, or acknowledgement of spacial distances that aren't relivent to the plot.

Not really, no. More people reacted to H. Prime getting blown up and we even got to see the people at ground zero before they were vaporized.

Leia actually barely reacted at all when Alderaan was blown up and she seemed to just shrug it off since.

We aren't given enough background to determine weather or not the Hosian system is a collection of moons around a gas giant like Yavin or if it is supposed to be multiple planets in a solar system.

Also it is a very impotent scene in the film, #1 because we have no idea what the hosian system is and learn about it seconds before it is destroyed. As opposed to alderaan, that place our hero's are going in ANH. Lei mentions it when she is first captured by Vader, the loss of a million people at once when it is destroyed moves force sensitive obi to have to sit down and reflect on what just happened.

In TFA a billion lives being wiped away is barely felt by anyone in the film and even less by the audience.

I would expect them to at least respect scientific laws, at least to believable levels. Even children realise that planets in other solar systems can't be seen, let alone so closely.

The original trilogy isn't exempt though, they had a similar problem of scale in Empire when Han decides to travel to Bespin in a hyperdrive-less Millenium Falcon, saying it was 'nearby'. But it wasn't as glaring as in TFA.

Sorry, I worded that badly. In the end, it comes back to internal consistency, and with that comes a level of understanding for scientific laws established in previous films as being identical to those of our own, with some local exceptions - chiefly, of course, being the Force. You are completely right in that regard.

But having science FICTION elements doesn't mean that the rest of the cosmos doesn't need to follow its own established rules.

I get that people place an undue importance on lore and world building, but that's not what Star Wars should be about. It's a Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon space adventure, not Warhammer. The fact that it isn't up its own ass regarding this stuff is part of its appeal, and part of why the series got progressively worse as the EU went on. Did you see the red letter media video on Darth Vader's suit? That's what caring about lore gets you every time.

Before seeing the movie, I assumed that the weapon worked by transporting the beams via hyperspace.

So they could hypothetically target any planet in the galaxy, making it a pretty terrifying device.

Blowing up Alderan was more a character moment. It had no bigger significance.

>>

Blowing up Alderaan terrified the rest of the galaxy into obeying the Empire.

>Fear will keep them in line. Fear of this battlestation.

How many of you fucks are actually shitposting without ever watching the movies?
>>
>>64470317
This

JJ doesn't understand audience investment

Luke's guardians dieing, and alderaan being destroyed weren't dramatized, even though we knew more about luke's aunt and uncle and alderaan than we knew about this system. The reason for this is audiences are psychopaths and we have to really connect with fictional characters before we care what happens to them. That's why han solo being turned into a popsicle calls for more dramatic emphasis than the genocide of an entire planet.

And the second biggest mistake is making a dramatic moment out of exactly what happened in the original star wars. Those civilizations being wiped out felt the same as han solo's death. It's manufactured and meaningless.

Alderaan was the political seat of the rebellion because Bail Organa was leading the rebels from there. Alderaan was also fairly close to the core and thus its destruction would be noticed quicker and would have more of an effect on politics and trade.

People saying Star Wars is fantasy...

The original trilogy actually depicted a vision of a believable, "lived-in" future. In contrast to other 70's sci-fi that featured outlandish disco-looking environments and wacky outfits, Star Wars tech, costumes, robots, and aliens all had a grimy, industrial credibility. And by the standards of science fiction literature, the droids, hyperdrive tech, blasters etc were all superficially plausible.

Even the force, though it's described in mystical terms, is just telepathy and a bit of telekinesis, which was also pretty plausible to audiences in 60s and 70s (paranormal powers were kind of in vogue back then).

Put simply, the idea of building a big space station that can fly into a star system and blow up planets with a huge laser, feels pretty acceptable.

Sucking the entire mass of a sun into a planet 1/10,000th of its size, then shooting a beam ACROSS THE GALAXY is anime level of retarded.
>>
>>64477842
Is not anime level retarded if you have a way to move all the invisible gas pockets away from the laser and a way to stabilize to beam such that it doesn't diverge and stays parallel.

Not that big a stretch for a universe with ftl travel. Maybe there just aren't any major gas pockets in the way?
>>
>>64477842
>Sucking the entire mass of a sun into a planet 1/10,000th of its size, then shooting a beam ACROSS THE GALAXY is anime level of retarded.
