The US was already done with monster shit by the time the Japs hit their stride. Most western monster flicks were just the same "big dumb animal shows up, gets fucked at the end" fare anyway, but the Japs made the monsters into marketable characters in their own right, allowing the genre to stay in the public's eye and develop into brands.
Then it went to shit in both west and east and never fully recovered. When it came back, the genre was far too stained by shit to make a global impact. The 1998 American movie made a sorry attempt to revitalize it, but it didn't stick. Nowadays, it isn't THAT big even in Japan as in its heyday, but who knows, maybe one of these adaptations will have enough staying power to attract more people than just the genre's pre-established base of fanatics.
